They call me the Sandwich King

"It's not a matter of who shoots who, it's the matter of who gets in the way of the bullets." - IRON WOLF 412

"The power of the mind can overcome any obstacle." - IRON WOLF 412

Trample the weak, Hurtle the dead.

“We are the Mirratord. We strike with speed and stealth. Our enemies will not see their deaths. They will not know their fate. In darkness, we will see light. In light, we will see darkness. No matter the location, we will see victory. If we fail, no one will know. Like a ghost, our presence is a mystery. For the honor of the mirratord" join the Mirratord

It probably had to do with Master Chiefs ancestors, in that he is a descendent of a Forerunner.

Not quite.

I always thought that since he gained sentience by the combined knowlege and memories of both human and covenant, he knows of the history and therefore the sins of each race.

Think of how many brutal wars the human race has been through in just the last three hundred years. He knows all of the sins humanity has committed, and being the combined knowlege of all those memories, he becomes a monument to those sins.

As the Flood infects, the Gravemind gains the personality and knowledge of those it infects. That includes mental patterns, like behaviors. He is literally a monument to all our sins

The chief 'peeled the potato' a few times too many, and, as a result, Jesus created the Gravemind to destroy him.

The Gravemind was created because of Chief's sins, a monument, if you will.

Hmm, upon thinking about it. Is it possible that the Gravemind is talking about the failures of the Forerunner?

They failed to stop the Flood and resorted to a mass genocide on a galactic scale to halt the progression. Sure they chose some species to save, but a lot were killed. An ultimate price to pay.

The Gravemind is a monument to his sins because it's the only real thing left from that part of history.

But I haven't read Cryptum yet. Apparently it talks about what this could be more.

I believe it's a hint that the whole Halo story is a metaphor to the story of christianity. The Flood representing sin and the Gravemind representing Satan.
There's a topic about this stuff under Top Forum Topics to the right called: Halo as a Christian Allegory.

We Are The Meta.

The Forerunners chose the humans to inherit all that was once theirs. That's why human DNA activates when Covenant doesn't. They saw themselves in the humans, the potential to think and care for the bigger picture than the self.

"I am a monument to all your sins', It reflects the fact that the Forerunners couldn't defeat the Flood. That their choice for killing themselves would also be passed onto the humans, possibly a never ending cycle of species fighting an endless battle against the Flood. It also shows that humans make the same or just as bad choices/mistakes/sins. (Some who don't do their actions for the whole but for the 1 instead.)

Because Humanity are the heirs to the Forerunners and that race's metaphorical son, they have essentially inherited the consequences of all the Forerunner have wrought. Cryptum and the new plot devices it introduced sheds a lot of light on some of the Gravemind's lines, I'd highly suggest picking up a copy of the book sometime.
