Subject: Halo 4's unidentified planet a Dyson Sphere?

A Dyson Sphere is a system of satellites that orbit and encompass a star. Then they will start to harness the star's energy. Other versions of the dyson sphere completely cover the star, which is what I believe the Forward Unto Dawn (the frigate that is carrying Master Chief and Cortana) is floating into.

For those of you who think that I am pulling this out of my ass, go read the Ghost of Onyx. Dr. Halsey refers to it as the micro Dyson Sphere. So what do you think????

NOT INTO THE LONG GRASS!

No I don't think so.

Too lazy to explain

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

You realise that the Micro Dyson Sphere the Forerunners use for their Shield Worlds is only "a few meters in diameter" in normal space?

I am pretty sure it's a Micro Dyson Sphere. Could even be a shield world.

Not all shield worlds are inside slipspace, the Halo Wars shield world was in normal space. It's not a bad assumtption that the planet could be a Micro Dyson Sphere, this would give us other enviroments than just infinite amount of Forerunner corridors.

It can't be a MDS, they are only a few meters in diameter because they're encased in a slipspace bubble of compressed dimensionality.

hmm..

the only way it could be is if this happens somewhat directly after the ark fired or during the wait another installation was activated. thus the MD was activated which would make it large and then shrinks as time goes down.

though i don't support it that is how it could happen

The Ark "fired" in 2552, John and Cortana are still adrift by 2556. The antechamber portal leading to the Dyson Sphere would be closed by then. Plus, the firing was stopped by John, there'd be no reason for the MDS to be open if there's no threat of the Halos firing.

I wake up to find myself
After all these years
And where all the time has gone
Still seems so unclear

Personally, I think it's a giant "planet-wide" network. Perfect for an A.I. to go rampant on...

Shield World =/= Dyson Sphere.

The two act in a same way, but look different and function differently. In such a way that you could best say a Dyson Sphere might be a more sofisticated take on the Shield World concept.

From what we know, you enter a Shield World by going through, basically a door, in the planet.
And from what we know, you enter a Dyson Sphere by stepping inside a portal.

From what we've seen in the trailer, the "thing" looks more like....the Ark Portal. And if it does function like that one, it will most likely transport us to an unknown location, much like how the Ark Portal linked to the Ark. In that scenario, we could be transported to a Shield World/Dyson Sphere, but also to any other random place the Forerunners/Precursors linked to that Portal.
Given the fact it looks more like a Portal and not like the entry points we know for Shield Worlds and Dyson Spheres, I'd say this last scenario is most likely.

It doesn't look like a portal if you actually look at it, it is an entrance.

Star trek had an episode on a dyson sphere (shield world for halo) and it looked, acted, and opened the exact same way as the planet.

Exact science, is not an exact science.

Idiots, Dyson make Vacuum Cleaners!!

  • 06.21.2011 7:43 AM PDT

It could be a dyson sphere. We definitely know that the Forerunners built mega-structures like Halo and the Ark. So why not build a sphere that can harness the full output of a star?

I think I read somewhere the on the exterior, you would fight Forerunner machines and perform space combat. The interior would be Earth like and feature some UNSC.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Karen Traviss is making a non-direct sequel to Ghosts of Onyx. In Ghosts of Onyx Dr. Halsey, Kelly, Tom, Lucy, etc. all went into a dyson sphere. In the trailer, the planet looked to have a dyson sphere. Anybody think the connection of Traviss writing a non-direct sequel, other characters stuck in dyson sphere of GoO, and the planet looking to have a dyson sphere is a coincidence? I think we're going into the dyson sphere and may have to go on a rescue mission or something.

If you people would actually look at it you would see that it is an opening to the sphere not some portal

Star Trek isn't Halo.
Besides: the Dyson Sphere is a fictional construction so Trek and Halo can have completely different looks etc.

Now as for the descriptions of the entrances:
Shield World
Entrance basically is a huge hole between outer and inner shell of the planet, blocked off by energy fields

Dyson Sphere
No pictures available. Description:

"atop the artificial hill of concentric rings"

...

"The top of the structure was crowned with a meter-wide ledge and thirteen finlike towers.."

"inside the ring of towers, a series of additional concentric circles fell steeply into the middle of the structure. In the exact center was a hol three meters wide, glowing with a brilliant blue-white heatless illumiation"

(Ark) Portal
Has 13 finlike towers, and the blue-white illumination...but then spews out a huge teleporting ball looks very much like the:

Unkown Structure Halo 4
An 8 "finned" structure with the same blue tower of light as the Ark Portal. Size also matches the Ark Portal more than the Dyson Sphere portal

Ok, so neither of them look identical. You and I were both wrong in that ;) But the design still looks more like the Ark Portal. Main difference with the Dyson Sphere portal, apart from its size, is the lack of the 13 towers and the way isn't like a round pyramid.

So what can we conclude at this moment: its some kind of portal, and it looks quite a lot like the one on Earth. And thats it. Your guesses at a Dyson Sphere being on the other side are just as random as my guesses of it leading anywhere else.

the dyson sphere in star trek is the same appearance as the shield world in halo and that is what i was referring to.

Halowars shield world was more than likely one of the original shield worlds used for attacking the flood not a shelter from halo.

I am fine with a portal being deep inside the structure, it (for a lack of better wording) is "stupid" to think nontheless build a huge structure and have the opening lead directly to a portal that leads to somewhere important. that just doesn't make sense.

and FYI i am not mad, raging, or in a bad mood, for some reason some of the newer people think every post i type is a rage.
