I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

I thought about this when watching the Nostaliga Critic's review of Battlefield Earth.
If Grunts breathe Methane, then the atmosphere obviously has a -blam!-load of Methane. So if a Covenant ship landed, wouldn't there have been some spark or something that would have ignited all of the methane?
Pretty much

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

You make it sound like they let the methane run free through the ships, they keep it on tanks.

It's probably not concentrated enough to do that. It is highly flammable though since there are natural occuring pillars of fire sprouting up over the planet.

good point OP
you other guys he's talking about the grunts home planet before the covenant, surely an explosive must have go off at some point

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

I am sure the Covenant thought of that. If you dropped a match onto a planet full of methane would it explode.

No.

actually, no.

Fire needs 3 things to exist. Heat, Fuel and Oxygen.
Remove oxygen and you have no worries about your planet going up in smoke, this is why your light filament doesn't instantly blow, because there is no oxygen in a lightbulb.

I thought about that. Imagine if the UNSC-or a splinter faction, like "rogue" ONI agents, would detonate a UNSC ship in the atmosphere of Balaho. The explosion would introduce oxygen into the atmosphere, and would cause a chain reaction. Or would that just not be enough?

Exactly, if a certain amount of oxygen gets to the atmosphere of Balaho (Homeworld of Grunts for those who don't know) and gets a high enough temperature it burns until it's all carbon dioxide. Same thing happens when a certain amount of methane gets to the atmosphere of earth with a high temperature, sure it burns, but only as long as there is something left to burn.

I would imagine that for Grunts oxygen is a light and maybe even power source just like oil is (has been) to us.

ONI Prowler oxygen drop: not enough oxygen to saturate a planet.

Oxygen getting into atmosphere: oxygen doesnt escape earth (thankfully :P) and the "naturally occurring pillars of fire" are these buildups of oxygen.

Oxygen as oil: thats a pretty cool idea really, makes sense too.
