Subject: Am i screwed?

Killing is a strong word, i prefer the phrase: Removal from the world by force.

ok, so i tried starting up my halo 2 copy today on my new computer, and after installing it etc etc, i got to the windows live login, and typed my product key in, i keep getting an error message saying the amount of times the key can be used has been used, so what should i do? i can't play the game at all with out signing in anyway -_-

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

Yep. You can only use the CD a certain number of times before you can't use it anymore. It's a stupid restriction. Enjoy the game!

I'll withhold my comments for the time being, but I'm actually laughing pretty hard right now. Point proven yet again.

I don't get what's funny? I played the game before, but it's not working on my new laptop, so i can't play? i asked if there was a solution and you said no.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

You bought h2v. That's what's funny.

Call up MS support, and pray that they give you a new key that only works a few times.

  • 06.21.2011 5:15 AM PDT

Something smells fishy...

Am I Evil?

On a more serious note: you should probably either get a different game, waste your money on H2V again, or call up Microsoft for a possible new key.

Add me to your friends list if you haven't already. It's a lot more fun to play with people from The Maw and people I know than random noobs.

Halo 2 won't let you install it? Well I'll be, looks like Microsoft is finally looking after us PC gamers :D

I wonder if my copy will still work on my new computer because I installed it a bunch of times on my old XP computer trying to get the online multiplayer to work when it first came out. I had already played the campaign so the $50 was almost completely wasted.

Hey, I'm TetriS/r4v3n/Ryx. I've been modding Halo 1 pc since late 2008-2009, and playing Halo 2 Vista since summer of 2010. If you need any help with Halo 1 modding, just ask; I haven't modded in a while but I remember most of it.

I'm always up for a h2v game; message i4Ni TetriS and I'll get back to you.

That makes no sense, when i get invalid key, there's no option to call someone or anything -_-

EDIT: what is the number i should call?

That's the number of bans in this thread. Next time you want to derail something, go stand in front of a train.

As has been said, you can only use the key a certain amount of times.

After that, you have to ring up and get an activation code in the series of blocks A, B, C, D, E, F and maybe G, I forget.

Depends what country you're in, the number you ring. In the UK it is a freephone (0800) number, sure it would be in America too.

The other day I installed Halo 2 Vista after a period of not playing for a few years, and didn't ask me for that. Activation limit must've been reset after a certain amount of months/year(s).

There is absolutely no need to buy another copy for the key, why would they do that?

If it's saying invalid key, then you must've made a mistake in typing it out. Confused a B for an 8? I've done that before.

OP, if you are still here, send me a private message, you can have my CD key. I haven't played the game since 2007.

That is odd.

I know you've sent a message to that person.

But a question though, did you enter the key first thing through setup or later on?

I sent you my key. Good luck. Write it down on your H2v box or something and don't share it with anyone.

Don't listen to Dusk. It's really unlimited use. It stops after 5 uses each time. But all you have to do is call Microsoft and they'll reset the key for you. That's all, no strings attached, no need to buy a new copy.

I'm just simply providing a solution to the problem. The legal solution too...

Anyways, like I said, it's not a big deal contacting Microsoft support. Unless you pirated your game, you shouldn't have any problems talking to them.

But isn't it annoying to even have to call Microsoft? H2V should have unlimited installs by now.

Honestly you shouldn't have had to to call Microsoft for a new key from the beginning. Heck Microsoft shouldn't have set any restrictions on how many times H2V could be installed anyway.

I'm a believer in the idea that Microsoft should not put installation restrictions on its products. I believe once you buy it you should be able own it forever or as long as possible. But that's a whole other story.

Yeah well, it wasn't always like this. Back in the days of Windows 95 and up to Windows 2000, it was pretty much unlimited activations. However, piracy came into picture. People to cheep to buy something. My philosophy is that if you can afford it, then go ahead and buy it. If you can't afford it, then don't even think about getting it. It's because of piracy that we have CD Key limits.

I don't know why my PC key wouldn't work, and for some reason, it installed but wouldn't link my PC key with my gamertag -__-

but thanks for the key, as it worked.

There will always be piracy. Humans are corrupt. Microsoft needs to understand this. What you need is a system of defense against piracy. What Microsoft can do is build up a defense that isn't at the expense of people who buy Microsoft products legitimately. It's like if some Navy Seals were going to rescue a ship that was boarded by Somali Pirates but their game plan was to kill everyone on the ship including the hostages.

Then what do you propose to help curb this piracy? Unlimited activation just encourages sharing of keys so people can download illegal copies of software and use those unlimited keys to activate their products. Perhaps if PC games worked like Xbox 360 games where the discs need to be digitally signed by Microsoft first for them to work. But I'm sure that will be easy to bypass. So what do you propose?
