Forum Rules.
FAQ.
I'm certifiable.

I've just put up my first-final draft of canned responses for spamming, trolling, and flaming. I've hosted the text file here for download (only about 4k). I suggest keeping the text file handy, on the desktop for instance, and then cutting and pasting the appropriate section into the reply. Each section is labeled with asterisks surrounding the name, so that in future it will be easily searchable.

Oh, and all feedback is welcome... this took longer than I'd first thought, so I've got a nagging suspicion that it isn't as good as it should be.

The full text is posted below, so you'll see how they look when used.

*SPAM*

Please be aware that repeated posting of material unrelated to forum topics (spamming) is a violation of the bungie.net Terms of Use. This post signifies that a member of the New Mombasa Strike Team has reported this thread to the moderators for their inspection and action.

We encourage fellow forum-goers to review the Terms of Use before posting, if you have not already done so. Remember, you too can report spam to the moderators at their chapter page. If you see spam, this is your best course of action.

Spammers thrive on attention! If you want them to stop, don't respond! We ask that other forum-goers avoid replying in the thread; the moderators are aware of the problem, and will fix it shortly.

*TROLLING*

Posting inflamatory material with the intent of starting an argument (trolling) is against the bungie.net Forum Rules. This post signifies that a member of the New Mombasa Strike Team has reported this thread to the moderators for their inspection and action.

We encourage fellow forum-goers to review the Terms of Use before posting, if you have not already done so. Remember, you too can report trolling to the moderators at their chapter page. If you see trolls in action, this is your best course of action.

*FLAMING*

Posting personal abuse (flaming) is against the bungie.net Forum Rules. This post signifies that a member of the New Mombasa Strike Team has reported this thread to the moderators for their inspection and action.

We encourage fellow forum-goers to review the Terms of Use before posting, if you have not already done so. Remember, you too can report flaming to the moderators at their chapter page. If you see a thread reduced to nothing but flames, this is your best course of action.

Flaming doesn't help. Sorry. We've learned this through bitter experience. We ask that other forum-goers try not to post when angry or upset; many times people have posted something in a flame post that they later regret. We ask that other forum-goers avoid replying in the thread; the moderators are aware of the problem, and will fix it shortly.

Sounds official, and their is not much anyone can argue to any of those. I think if we just make these official, it will help. A bit of uniformity always implies teamwork.

I have already used it twice, once in each of Davester's threads in the Flood. (wrong forum, but still a good point to get across.)

Davester was a bad choice for a thread test. He doesn't care. This was pointed out to me by ObbiQuiet. He also pointed out that stating rules to someone who spams all the time, is technically spam.

That's cool, I now think we should all use this....that is people who are on NMST.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.

Oops, I saw Vella use one of those and thought that he had made it up... Sorry about the unnecessary PM, Steve.

Great job! But 1 question what do the mods think of this?

Good work, but I think I'll just wing it. I'm not trying to be a sub-mod here, only post what's relevant to the situation. I think posting generic rules like this will generally only serve to put off the targeted 'perps' and be more or less ignored. Perhaps simply setting a good example is better than reading them the rules over and over.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, and I could have not idea what I'm talking about, but I'll pass on using canned responses. Consider me a 'freelance agent.' ^_-

What does it matter what the mods think? We're making a concerted effort to help... we were doing it before just not as an "official" group. I would like to think they are happy with us, but the way I see it... they aren't fussed so long as we obey the rules.

  • 09.01.2004 12:00 AM PDT

bah

I deduce that the mods love it, wouldn't you? It has been proven that the best way to reduce crime is peer pressure against it, so we can apply that here too. Some people like to rebel against authority because they think it's cool, and we are solidly saying it isn't. Also note that many trolls will mock these warnings, just ignore them.

P.S. Nicely written Steve. I have always viewed you as a very fluent person.

It's a great concept. Except I think you need one more thing. Spelling is a point in need to be worked on in these forums.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. Looks like I may have been a little too perfectionist when looking at them last time. Glad you're finding them useful already.

Well, I don't think that any of us care what Davester thinks... the responses are built for those who don't know better, and are designed to reassure other forum-goers that something is being done. If it discourages the "dogpiling" that often happens after spam/troll/flame posts, then the canned text is worth it.

Oh, and posting a reminder about the forum rules when they've been violated can't be spam unless they're posted so many times that other content gets drowned out. They're on-topic, and at one per violated thread shouldn't break the spam threshold.

Just to cross all "t"s and dot all "i"s, it's best to have already contacted HFCS about the problem thread or to do so when Previewing the post (another reason I put the link in :) ) before putting it up.

Next up, canned responses for posts in the wrong forum. When They're Done.
