Alright, who is with me, aside from the fact that rockets are probably the easiest weapon to score kills with, now we have tracking capability? I was watching the video closely and it seems that tracking is only available when zoomed in on a target. I also noticed that the target turns to red almost instantly when catching an object on your target reticle. Now, if this is true, that tracking will only occur on vehicles while zoomed in and won't cover a ridiculous amount of land then I guess I can live with it. But I can see myself tottally annoyed with tracking rockets on elites or chiefs. And if I am not mistaken, on the second time that both bungie employees were displaying the rocket tracking there is one instance where the chief is zoomed out, yet when the hog crosses the reticle the target turns red. So I am really confused on this. Bottom line is that I hope tracking will only work on vehicles at close range and won't cover a large amount of land.

the rocket launcher has plenty of flaws (insanely long reload, slow traveling rockets, large blast radius, small max ammo)

Plus, you have to zoom in and keep them in your sights for it to lock on. It's like the AVRiL from UT 2004, perfectly balanced IMO

I agree that the tracking could be an issue mainly because I think it won't require skill to use it (hopefully I'm wrong)... This was a major problem in Tribes 2 which also had tracking rocket launchers and any time you were in a server with vehicles all the new people would find a hill and start shooting homing rockets on any vehicle they see, this was very annoying because it didn't matter how much skill you had in piloting the vehicles a person without any skill at all could just point and shoot and the rocket would do all the work for him.

The way Vevendi are fixing this in Tribes Vengenace is by not making it homing, instead it just follows your reticle wherever you look (so you need skill to use it), which then would solve the problem of non skilled players messing up the whole game for others.

Hopefully Bungie wont make the same mistake that Sierra did with Tribes 2 and the rocket launcher...

bah

I have yet to watch the videos again, but I do recall the reticle staying on the vehicle throughout the thime the rocket was airborne. I hope it's not ust a "point, shoot, forget" kind of thing.

you have to keep it in your sights for a good few seconds. I think that'll be god enough

In Tribes 2 you had to keep the vehicle in your sight for longer than it showed in the video... that didn't balance the RL at all.

I think Bungie is doing a terrific job with Halo 2 it's just that I don't want something as small as a weapon feature to make multiplayer not as fun as it could be.

besides, if you noticed, one rocket didn't do it in this time. This shows that rockets have been weakened as well

One rocket in the the first Halo MP didn't do the job either, depending on where you hit it from. Obviously if you shoot the target anywhere remotely close to a passenger they would die on impact. However if your rocket hit from behind you'd just lunge right out of the hog.

i haven't seen the video yet, but i was under the impression (from the IGN article) that you had to leave the reticle on the target for it to continue to home in on it. like a laser guided missile. if not though, ughh. that wouldn't be too cool at all. unless you had to leave it locked for a solid five seconds.

I'm pretty sure you dont need to look at the vehicle once the missile is fired (in the 2nd tracking missile shot that he fired he wasn't looking at the warthog). That would probably balance it a bit more though (if you had to continue looking at the vehicle until it hit, or something like that).

man, i really, REALLY hope you're wrong. but before we get ahead of ourselves, keep in mind that we haven't actually played with/against it. it may play a lot better than it sounds.

EDIT: i just realized that you guys have been talking about the rockets homing in on vehicles. if that's the case, then i don't have any problem at all with them homing. that's what rockets are for anyways, for taking out heavy armor. but i do NOT think it is a good idea for the rockets to home in on foot troops.

I don't think it's going to be quite so bad as that. First, we don't know if rockets can track infantry. (which I definitely hope not) Secondly, the warthog in the video wasn't doing anything remotely evasive. Heck, we don't even use Warthogs in Halo 1 anymore just because it's suicide. The moment you jump in you get three pistols immediately opening up on you and you die near instantly.

Just think of this as a new skill set. Rocket Dodging with your vehicle. We don't know what the turn radius is on a rocket so it might just be timing a bootleg to evade the rocket plus there's always cover. Pay attention to where you are and where cover is and when you hear that rocket firing drive your hog behind the rocks and start laughing.

We can't judge anything until we fly down to LA and play it ourselves :)

I really hope that you can dodge rockets that are locked on cause of the turning radius of rockets or even by speeding up using the new boost feature on vehicles

Maybe it's just me but the rocket launcer seems to be shooting just a ball of plasma....doesn't look like a rocket. Hopefully they make it look somewhat like a rocket when it's released
