We are all going to get banned aren't we?

despite all the conjecture around the subject the direct fact (and all you need to know) is that the forerunners left us to use the rings since they left the orion arm. this was due to humanity beating the flood in ancient times and the forerunners couldn't. there are ideas about humanity inheriting a "mantle" and others as such; but you should read halo cryptum and the other books before really believing anything.

1. In the past (over 100,000 years ago), humanity was fighting a war with the forerunner. This came about when the forerunner attacked humans who were spreading into their territory. Humanity was doing this because they were running from the flood. But the forerunner didn't know this and took it as an act of war and obliterated the hell out of humanity.

It wasn't until after the fact that the forerunner discovered the flood, and that humanity was running from them. They were like "aww s***". So for one, the forerunner owed humanity something for mistakenly deciding to obliterate their race.

Secondly, they discovered that humanity found a cure for the flood, and they were willing to sacrifice however many of themselves to do it. Not only were humanity willing to do what even the forerunner could not, but they were able to stop the flood once, they could theoretically do it again if ever required.

"Bet you can't stick it"

A cure? I thought that the closest thing that humanity had to a cure was the disease that Johnson had.

It was during the forerunners time. Not currently.

In Cryptum you find out that humanity found a way to destroy the flood. It required a sacrifice but it worked.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Because the humans were meant to inherit the mantle and take hold of the galaxy as determined by the Precursor. When the Forerunner discovered this, they left the Halos for us.

Johnson didn't have a disease. His condition was a cover up for his Orion/Spartan I project augmentations, which, in turn makes him incompatible with Flood assimilation apparently.

In any case ancient humanity developed the ultimate biological weapon against a Flood in the form of a virus given to humans who were intentionally sacrificed to the Flood so that the virus would spread amongst the Flood. It worked, and ancient humanity ended up defeating the Flood. Unfortunately they lost to the Forerunners, and subsequently the information regarding how the Flood were "cured" was lost as well.
