Subject: Blacklists, permanency and hidden posts. PLUS, Reiginko invents a p...

It seems to me that an option for group admins to permanently blacklist a member, rather than a super-extended temporary ban that lasts hundreds of years, could help the website run more efficiently and reduce server stress, and all that yib-yob.

For example, let's imagine I found a group, called Reiginko's Cheesy Combustibles. Now, this develops into a small tight-knit community, and all the members have a ball.

UNTIL ONE DAY, someone, (say, this chump) joins Reiginko's Cheesy Combustibles, and starts spamming up the forums, and generally ruining everyone's day. So down swoops Reiginko, who unleashes the ninjas on him, extending the ban to, say, 2794.

Now here's what happens. Bungie.net is told that thirdlast may not return to Reiginko's Cheesy Combustibles for another 778 years, and that all of his posts are to be hidden until that time. What this means is that all of thirdlast's spammy junk is retained on the Bungie.net server, and all his posts are archived to be retrieved in 2794.

And here comes the suggestion. Why not add an option for admins to permanently ban members of their group, which deletes, rather than hides, all of thirdlast's posts. I mean, surely after a while all these posts that are being hidden will begin to account for a large amount of server space, and there's no real reason for them to be there.

I dunno, it just seems like a useful thing.

Are you sure that every "invisible" or hidden post is saved on the server? Or is it possible that they are deleted, and that Bungie is just messing with our heads, like they have been for the last decade and a half? I'm just as curious as you are on this subject, and it was an insightful topic. I'll check back later for any other responses. And now im rambling, because i'm tired... night night

Sounds like a good idea. But first, some major problems should be resolved:

eg: The spaces that appear when you edit threads.

I like the idea to delete posts and save server space. How do keep people from abusing the power?

Achronos has total power. He can do anything. This is a helpful link:

He was blacklisted for that long? What happens if he puts himself in cryo-stasis, only to come back and spam from his location hidden from the Pfhor?

-Quaere verum.

Got a report? Use the report tool or send a pm.
Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I think this has been asked before (only in a slightly less amusing and or interesting manner) and i stand by what i said then; Tis a good idea (or it was some variant of that).

It would certainly be much easier than thinking up a date (thinking hurts brains).
But now allow me to wonder along the path for a moment and take this idea a stage and a half further.

Say we had this awesome "Obliterate this user" button/feature, what if we also had a little tick box so we could opt if all his/her/it's posts get deleted. Therefore, we could choose to do it ourselves (perhaps because we only want to delete a few of his posts and keep the rest as evidence or to hang on the chapter mantle piece) or we have the choice for the system to rid it's data and history of all this splendid user's posts. Just an idea there that we may wish to consider.

Yet, now we've been to fantasy land and brought back a small ornament for our mothers and other loved ones, let us think about reality. Although Achronos and the team have done a great job of trying to stop users from un-wilfully gaining high-powered security roles, it is still not impossible for people to do this (unfortunately) and therefore, and this is the main point so I'll put it in bold, if someone was to un-wilfully gain an admin (full power) security role, there would be nothing stopping them from permanently ridding your chapter, which you have lovingly raised since birth and seen it through its education, of any member they wish including you (maybe).

However, i do rather think it should be no fault of anyone other than a chapter founder's if someone does un-wilfully gain full control of the other person's chapter and also due to the fact that Reiginko's idea is so Super Vega MegaAwesomely Awesome, i don't see why anyone should really have a problem with implementing this feature in the future.

P.S. Reig, liked the new phrase. Mine just doesn't quite cut it like yours.

I think he forgot about the b.net user bill of rights. It goes something like this:You have no rights.

Also about GP's point, has anyone ever had a problem where someone got admin privledges without someone doing something stupid like giving them the power?

Just outta curiosity, have you ever tried simply not filling in the date field of a blacklisting before?

It seems to me that deleting 25 posts in a group in one thread would be a hard thing to do.

Someone could say: Why are MY posts irretrievable, while XYZ's posts are retrievable after his blacklisting ends?

To which someone says: tough -blam!-. Well that would be my response. XD

Part 2. We'd all love to say that. And it would be a natural and correct response, in this instance. However, as a legal precedent, it would be harmful and lead to abuse in the hands of others.

Yeah the thing is the only people whose posts are going to be deleted, are those who would never have had those posts made visible again in their lifetimes anyway.

You're getting a little too worked up. If someone trolls Body Politic and as a result is banned, that's it. Groups set their own rules.
