Ignore my gamertag. It's actually Dragonzzilla.

If the UNSC had to disable a Covenant Spacestation nestled nicley in the Covenant frontlines, can there be a reason why the UNSC would rather send ground units like a team Spartans or ODSTs rather than use Nukes, MACs, or Ships?

BLAM!

It seems like you are talking about "Ghosts of Onyx." In that book the whole reason for the Spartan III program is revealed to take out high priority targets on the edge of UNSC accessible Space, despite the cost.

Basically they'd send the Spartan IIIs in because they KNOW they'd get the job done. Nukes were apparently scarce in the UNSC according to "the Fall of Reach." MAC platforms wouldn't work because you'd have to establish a defensive perimeter and I'm not sure the range on those weapons extends to another star system, so you'd be putting a lot of equipment and personnel at risk.

So I guess they probably did a cost/benefit analysis on all those things and determined that the Spartans were the best bet.

Depends. If the station is well-guarded by other ships, the UNSC would probably send ground units if it could. If it was some defenseless listening post, the UNSC would rather use a ship than waste the time of Spartans or ODST's.

What they'd probably do is send a few ships to engage the Covenant ships defending the station while Spartans infiltrated it and destroyed it. They do this because UNSC ground tech/forces are a match for Covenant ground tech/forces (Fall of Reach says this, not me) and have a much better chance with infantry engagements than space combat.

Not quite as reliable as Spartans. But I imagine they would depending on the tactical situation and/or objective.

I haven't read "Helljumpers" yet, but it's on the list. I'm sure I'll get a lot more insight into the ODST element of the UNSC once I crack that book.

Something this risky would be Spartan territory, unless the officer in charge of the mission felt blase with the lives of many ODST's.

Because say, what would they do if there was a Spacestation that served as a Nest for 70% of the Drones in the Covenant Military in that side of the Galaxy?

If it was well-defended, definitely Spartan territory. Get in undetected, plant a nuke by the core, get out. Against 70% of the drones of the Covenant, even in just a part of the galaxy? That's way too many for conventional ground forces, and it'd be way too well-guarded by the Covenant fleets for the UNSC to commit ships that are meant to be defending the remaining colonies to an attack.

Thats what I thought. Now, Spartan-III's would be less costly in that form of operation correct?

LOL There's always more halo to read.

I've already tackled (in this order):
-Contact Harvest +
-Cole Protocol +
-The Fall of Reach
-The Flood
-First Strike +

["+" means the ones I liked best]

and I'm currently reading Ghost of Onyx (worthy of a "+" so far)

My want list includes:
- Halo:Cryptum
- Helljumpers
- Halo:Evolutions I & II
- Halo Graphic Novel

...is there anything I'm missing?

I'm not a bastard! But on a serious note, how would the Spartans get past the Fleet protecting the Spacestation or the stations defenses and -blam!-?

BLAM!

Well in Ghosts of Onyx they talk about "new ODST" drop pods that are able to be dropped from slipspace that the Spartans are able to use too.

Basically while the UNSC ship is travelling through slipspace (pretty muchly undetected to enemy forces i think) they jettison these pods which eventually fall out of slip space into normal space and onto the target planet.

That is my assumption anyway.

So, the Pods even though in normal space are going to fast to detect because they've been accelerated by the Slipspace jump?

They didn't change any of the content of the novels (in the new editions) did they? Just the cover I thought.
