God, I hate overhyped games!
Alright, I purchased Doom 3 and Half-Life (too hyped games) in one day. Doom 3 was hyped as a "second coming" for years, while Half-Life is the legendary "best FPS ever."
Doom 3 was, in all honesty, quite good. It had awesome graphics, a decent story, cool monsters, a creepy atmosphere, and good-ole' run-n-gun gameplay mixed in with a few light strategy elements. It's not the "second coming," but it's a great game nonetheless.
Then, we come to Half-Life, an entirely different story. When I loaded it up, I was treated to a cool introductory sequence, in which Gordon rides a tram to his destination in the facility (can't remember it's name). However, this piece of storytelling took too long, and I never really found out why Gordon Freeman was there in the first place, nor did I feel any emotional connection like I do with the MC.
But, it didn't stop there. Once all Hell broke loose, I was relegated to shooting lame-looking headcrabs with my crappy pistol and shotgun. Hell, the crowbar was the best weapon! Then, I got to beat up on zombies and other uninspired baddies, who all followed the "Doom" AI engine-basically, they charge right at you, showing little intelligence whatsoever. Then, I got a wonderful box pushing puzzle! Oh, yay, sign me right up! I want to shoot things people, not push crates around! Then I found out about the horrid save system, which reminded me of Halo's, except Halo's actually worked properly. When I pushed a crate past this "checkpoint," suddenly, it disappeared! When I went back looking for it (I had to step across the checkpoint again), suddenly I saw it-past the checkpoint! I couldn't touch the damn thing, nor could I move it with shotgun blasts or grenades. I had discovered a bug which made me restart in frustration within the first 15 minutes of gameplay! Where were the laws of physics when you need them most?
Anyway, I'm posting this to both let out my frustration about how crappy Half-Life actually is, and to also see what games you guys think are overhyped without deserving it.

You're comparing brand-sparkly new Doom 3 to a six year old game? Classy.

Please consider the time frame of the titles you compare please. HL may not be revolutionary anymore but back then it was a godsend.

Over-hyped game = Halo 2

NO AMMOUNT of hype can do this thing justice. I get to try out a Demo of it within 48 hours =)

Yeah, man, simple arrogance really. 6 years old here man. That game broke a hell of a lot of ground when it came out... I dont believe any previous game had encouraged shooting in the head, no other had skeletal animation... the wicked looking and sounding but useless Mp5... what are you thinking? That game was easily, easily game of 1998 man. Not 2004 though, I will say that much. But that much means nothing.

Doom 3 plays a lot like an older game, and people say Half-Life is better than the newer (and far superior) Halo. Also, Goldeneye on N64 is old (older than Half-Life, I believe), and I still consider it one of the best shooters ever.

Oh, yeah, I'm a card-carrying six year old. Try, adult in less than a month. And nothing can change the fact that Half-Life blows (I'd rather play the independently developed mod Counter Strike, which is actually fun). Oh, and in Goldeneye for N64 (1997), one shot to the head killed, while it would take multiple body shots. It also had better graphics, AI, gameplay, and NO, I repeat, NO senseless crate-pushing.

Play through about 15 mins. of it. You'll love the crate-pushing puzzle (it's right after the part with the room with electrified water).

You obviously just don't 'get it.' I play Doom 3 regularly and still enjoy the occasional trip through Black Mesa to this day. Why not play though the whole game before passing judgement?

Half-life did a LOT of things no game has done before. Things that are so common now newcomers simply don't notice them.

Best part about it is that I am SO going to nick the Control Layout Form. That is one thing that will without a shadow of a doubt raise me a bob or 2 on ebay.

Yes, the story-telling device (Doom 3 and Halo ripped off it big time), as well as the flawed checkpoint system (which Halo ripped, but also fixed). Oh, well, maybe Half-Life 2 (which I'm gonna buy just because I wanna play through and see it before Halo 2 comes out, so I can decide the winner of "best FPS ever"-my money's on Halo 2) will be better.

"Why not play though the whole game before passing judgement?"-Surge
No offense or anything (I don't wanna start a fight over how much I hate Half-Life), but I would rather be drawn-and-quartered (Coolest. Death. Ever!) than play through another hour of Half-Life.
And, oh boy, am I spamming on this thread. :(

Indeed you are.

Just to tell you, the game gets much better a bit further in. When you start fighting the military, you'll see just how advanced the AI is in this game.
Also: 'Surface Tension' = one of the best levels ever in an fps. It's not something that can be explained, only experienced.

But if you're too stubborn, why should I care?

Sorry... but I'm gonna take over for ForceMorph here and say it would have to be Halo or Halo 2... and the hype is what destroys it for me...

I'll be on my own side.

over hyped game=Fable.

hyped game worthy of all of the hype=Final Fantasy VII or Halo 2

  • 09.01.2004 12:59 AM PDT

bah

You cannot tell if a game is overhyped before it comes out. Wait before calling Fable overhyped.

You want a overhyped game, here it is: Brute Force=Weak.
How can you compare Half-life(1998) to a FPS of today. Half-life was a work of art. Awesome moments that scare the bejeesus out of you. Like Surge said, "Surface Tension" is one hell of a chapter. Play the game 'till the end and then complain about what you don't like. But, believe me you won't have a lot of complaints for a game that is 6 years old and still has better a.i. than most games today.

Marathon... a 10 year-old game with more revolutionary stuff than you can poke a stick at... and you can poke alot of stuff with a stick. Also teh best story for any game in existence ;-)

Dude, I was referring to noone here as a six year old, the game is six years old man. Unfortunately this response is so late now it seems completely pointless...

Im afraid my pipe only takes the finest in tobacco. Does it seem strange that you have to destroy this stuff to enjoy it? I guess we do that with a lot in life. Here at Bnet, sometimes we like to destroy each other... but really does anyone enjoy it?

*sigh*
