God, I hate overhyped games!
Alright, I purchased Doom 3 and Half-Life (too hyped games) in one day. Doom 3 was hyped as a "second coming" for years, while Half-Life is the legendary "best FPS ever."
Doom 3 was, in all honesty, quite good. It had awesome graphics, a decent story, cool monsters, a creepy atmosphere, and good-ole' run-n-gun gameplay mixed in with a few light strategy elements. It's not the "second coming," but it's a great game nonetheless.
Then, we come to Half-Life, an entirely different story. When I loaded it up, I was treated to a cool introductory sequence, in which Gordon rides a tram to his destination in the facility (can't remember it's name). However, this piece of storytelling took too long, and I never really found out why Gordon Freeman was there in the first place, nor did I feel any emotional connection like I do with the MC.
But, it didn't stop there. Once all Hell broke loose, I was relegated to shooting lame-looking headcrabs with my crappy pistol and shotgun. Hell, the crowbar was the best weapon! Then, I got to beat up on zombies and other uninspired baddies, who all followed the "Doom" AI engine-basically, they charge right at you, showing little intelligence whatsoever. Then, I got a wonderful box pushing puzzle! Oh, yay, sign me right up! I want to shoot things people, not push crates around! Then I found out about the horrid save system, which reminded me of Halo's, except Halo's actually worked properly. When I pushed a crate past this "checkpoint," suddenly, it disappeared! When I went back looking for it (I had to step across the checkpoint again), suddenly I saw it-past the checkpoint! I couldn't touch the damn thing, nor could I move it with shotgun blasts or grenades. I had discovered a bug which made me restart in frustration within the first 15 minutes of gameplay! Where were the laws of physics when you need them most?
Anyway, I'm posting this to both let out my frustration about how crappy Half-Life actually is, and to also see what games you guys think are overhyped without deserving it.
