I think I'll support your theory, OP. At least I can accept that Reach didn't exist as way it intended by the books, just false cover made by ONI to boost the morale of civilians and military.

Aye, I'll accept your theory as now. It would explain why there's so many errors in the Reach and I doubt that Bungie would be so sloppy, it's likely that they wanted to use ONI cover-up to not tell actual story of what happened during Reach.

Amazing, many people doesn't know that Reach campaign was actual ONI-cover up. That way, it would be not canon as ONI "covers" up the real story on Reach... Intriguing!

  • 06.24.2011 10:58 AM PDT

*sigh* The only bit I would see being an actual changing would be the drop-off of Cortana fragment.

Also, doesn't the re-release of the book have Halsey mention the Covenant were there, and only just arrived in full force on the 30th?

  • 06.24.2011 11:11 AM PDT

Very interesting theory.

I genuinely haven't heard of a theory as obscure, yet utterly genius like this, in a long while. When you examine the undoubtedly aggressive and manipulative nature of ONI, it does generate the possibility that they manipulated the footage of Noble Team's actions during the Battle of Reach, in order to boost morale, or for other, more devious purposes.

  • 06.24.2011 11:27 AM PDT

Well, if it was all propaganda, why in the letter would this line be included?

"there's plenty of stuff in there that the old guard may still be willing to kill over"

Anyway, the way the letters are worded, why would one ONI official lie to a fellow ONI officer about it being "the most complete and accurate account of Noble Team's actions during the final weeks before the Covenant glassed Reach?"

Mhm, I think it's obvious that Reach was not intended to be written off as ONI propaganda, it may not be entirely accurate since the writer of the letter includes this comment:

Section 0 has had it for some time - so there's that - but I think you'll find enough intel in here for your purposes.

I bolded the part that would seem to indicate that there may be some tweaks to the facts and like, but other lines within the letter, as several people have pointed out, make it seem highly unlikely that Reach is nothing more than morale boosting lies.

They are in denial over the Reach retcon.

So it's now 'officially propaganda' from Oni.

It's not so much denial as it is an alternate explanation for the events at Reach. People accept Reach as canon, but this isn't something you can brush off.

It was coined originally by people wanting ALL of Halo Reach to be non-canon. The variant Cobra is suggesting (if I'm taking it right) is that parts may be edited from the actual events, though the entire thing is not all propaganda.

One huge hole in this theory.

Halsey's journal.

Unless that is a 'prop' from Oni....

But I doubt it.

As do I, but since it backs up most of events in Reach, I don't see why they wouldn't include it after they've looked at it.
ONI had the journal for years. They had plenty of time to make a fake one.

ONI Op 1: Okay, the fake journal is done, but I don't think anyone will buy it, what if they think it's fake?

ONI Op 2: Put coffee mug stains everywhere, everyone knows Halsey loved coffee, a lot.

ONI Op 1: Genius.

If this is true. Halsey would tare Oni apart with her bare hands.

Some people just aren't satisfied with disliking the game and pointing out that it has flaws :/ They have to find excuses to declare it non-canon or just outright declare that it isn't canon. Cobra is not one of those guys, I think he just posted this because it's an interesting "what if" kind of thing.

Cool theory.

So everyone excepts that what you do as the chief is happening in real time?

So Noble 6 delivers cortana to the autumn at the end of reach.

Chief is in cryo sleep right?
Then at the start of CE he is woken as they find the ring.

So after you get to the bridge chief and cortana have a conversation having never met that goes like this.

Cortana: Sleep well?.
Chief: No thanks to your driving.
Cortana: So you did miss me.

This doesnt seem to make any sense if they have never met.

Or am i being stupid and the chief already knew cortana then they took her to halsey to get the data she's found then took her back to the chief. In that case why didnt the chief take cortana himself and just wait there?

Anyway thats the bit i don't get about reach and makes me think it is liessssss.

If Halo: Reach the game was considered to be the new canon, i would hate Halo.

Lets face it, canon or not the story line was horrible. It wasn't thought out, there was no mood (Except the last level), characters were bland and never fleshed out. Story line was boring and cliche........

Every single Halo game previously has taken the canon into account, the writer stated this himself. He didn't let the canon control his creative output, but he made sure that it would at least fit into the pre-existing canon and try to have it make sense. (An example would be that we are told for awhile that S117 is the last Spartan. Which is untrue, these can be ignored because it is mainly for story telling purposes)>

With Reach? There were so many details that were just ignored for three years. I mean you can tell right from the first cut-scene they told the canon to F**K off.

With all the community support and attention they get to their game canon, they should have at least considered or planed around the recognized and accepted canon, not just completely disregarded it altogether. Thats just sloppy, lazy writing.

Honestly don't know what they were thinking. Did they think we wouldn't care in the slightest or something? Its truly sad, they used to be such a good company.

The letter in the legendary edition states that it's their interpretation of events, pieced together using what little information they had.

I actually think everything but Reach is ONI propaganda. Master Chief is such an impossible character its laughable.

  • 06.28.2011 7:10 PM PDT

May I ask how the first cutscene pointed at canon being ignored?

Also, I LOVE how people keep going "Reach ignores canon/ruins canon even though the TWO groups to hold the Halo Story Bible have both accepted it as canon."

Um, to you maybe. I fail to see how it 'wasn't thought out', as well as your other points.

Besides, yet another person -blam!-ing about lack of character development in a SINGLE FPS campaign. This is halo, NOT Mass Effect or some other RPG. Johnson's character development took place over THREE games. Hell, Master Chief hardly got any development.

Meh, if Reach is cliche, what's everything else? Master Chief being the sole guy who can turn the war around and stop the Covenant isn't cliche/bleh?
