Well I thought you were going to mention the true bias of these forums. What you have mentioned is not bias. Bias is when the mods around here lock or delete topics that are "against" Bungies best interest. It's called the supression of freedom of speech.

Let me give you an example. Halo 2 sucks. There, now your thread will be locked and the bias will shine through.

It's called the supression of freedom of speech.

Welcome to Bungie.net. You have no rights. Play nice.

You can say pretty much anything you want on a blog... if you desperately need to rain on others' parades, post factless doom-and-gloom material, and/or whine relentlessly about a game, why not look at getting one of your own? Most blogs are available free-of-charge these days.

-- Steve only locks the threads that are "toxic"; if they subtract from others' enjoyment or ability to use the forums, padlock city. Actual informed debate (y'know, with facts and analysis and citations and discussions and the like) go pretty much untouched around here. (We could use a few more of those.)

Believe me when I say this Steve. I've been here alomst as long as you. I know more about Bungie then most. Once upon a time that little line was funny. Sad how times can change so it can be used in a whole new different way.

Oh -blam!-, maybe that's why so many people complain?

If you want to be a part of one of the greatest and most active communities in the seventh column, come here. You will thank me later.

Whenever I go online, I find people that actually like to play halo 2 and like the game. Here, we have forums filled with complainers that all seem to have problems with the game. Whether it's the ranking system, little kids online, WHATEVER, everyone has something to complain about.

Why is this?

Moved to the Septagon, as it's more related to bungie.net than it is to Halo 2 multiplayer now. (Should've done that earlier, but alas I'm still working on that First Coffee.)

Let me give you an example. Halo 2 sucks. There, now your thread will be locked and the bias will shine through.

I've never once seen a thread deleted or locked merely because a mod disagreed with it. They might express their opinion in the thread, but they'll never take punitive action because they don't like what's being said. If it's being said in an inflammatory manner, however, then action will be taken, simply because the mods' job is to prevent inflammatory statements from turning into an all-out flamewar.

For example, I would consider the statement "Halo 2 sucks" in your post mildly inflammatory, especially since you were saying it merely to provoke a response, and because you didn't attempt to expand on your comment. Furthermore, merely stating your opinion, without giving reasons for your opinion, doesn't actually add to any discussion, and is therefore essentially spam. In addition, your statement not only failed to add to the discussion, it also brought up another discussion which was essentially completed, oh, say, a year ago. Those who agree with you don't really care about your opinion, since your opinion of a game should have no bearing on their own opinion of that game. Those who disagree with you also probably don't care about your opinion, because their own opinion of the game is probably based upon whether they enjoy it, and people who attempt to convince people who enjoy a certain activity that said activity is not enjoyable are generally referred to as "party poopers".

In closing, the main reason "Halo 2 sucks" threads and their ilk is that everyone's heard the arguments for or against already (about six thousand times), and making a new thread about it isn't a contribution to this community. Online communities like this one are based upon discussion, and if the topics of discussion remain the same all the time, the community condemns itself to irrelevance. Perhaps the most important goal of the forum moderator is to prevent the community from stagnating like this, and so it is his job to lock and delete threads which contribute to stagnation.

Agreed. However every case is different and in this case the statement was not one needed to backed up with reasons. It was merely an example.

I have nothing much to say on this statement other then it's somewhat, well..... nevermind. A banning I would get for sure.

I don't really think that explanation cuts it. I really hope I don't sound too harsh. I am trying to keep a mature and respectful approach to this subject. However, forums are indeed about discussion and I have seen great threads time and time again locked because of the topic. When indeed they did contribute worthwhile discussion to the forum. Thats the thing. I believe there is a general acceptance among the mods to lock negative posts about Bungies products simply because it's the easiest and best thing (in Bungies interest) to do so. Just my observations.

And how does this observation match with the frequency and volume of critical posts already on the bungie.net forums? Heck, if us moderators were locking posts just for negative content the forums would have much fewer than 6.2 million posts.

There is a world of difference between "bUNGEE r RONG" and "Wouldn't it be better if..."

-- Steve's also wondering if you could include some examples of "great threads" that got locked... links, if you can, but titles (and the forums they were posted in) would help.

Well I agree in the fredom of speech but remember there is some responsibility that comes with it. First of all this isn't the streets of America or other free speech countries. This is Bungie's comunity website. They don't have to have a forum. I mean if I were to come over to your house and talk trash about you, your house, and your job, would I stay welcomed for long? Of course not.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Keep in mind that the average Halo 2 live player is not a member of Bungie.

And the only people who have a problem with halo are the guys who regulars to Zanzibar and Opti match- in my opinion.

And Halo 2 has had some problems and people want to vent, so let them do it to the people who might actully care (bungie).

My observations have also been that truly worthwhile threads that are on-topic in their respective forums stay alive for quite a while. I've seen several Halo 1 vs. Halo 2 threads that lived full, active forum-lives until they died the natural way.

However, I have seen many more Halo 1 vs. Halo 2 threads that were "shot" in one of two ways: 1) The topic was nothing more than "haol2 sux!!!!!!!!!", and contributed nothing to the forums in the way of discussion. It was nothing more than an idiot trying to annoy other members. 2) The topic turned into nothing more than a flame war. People had nothing more to say than: "u just hat halo2 becuz u suk a it. u r a noob."

The moderators don't lock all "anti"-Halo 2/Bungie topics, just the stupid ones.

Simple. Human nature.

As a side note, to say that these forums are biased seems to be quite a narrow minded opinion. There are plenty of people here who like Halo 2 and have never complained or rarely do. Keep in mind that they only reason that it appears they are many people here who complain with no justified or balanced argument, is because these are mostly the people who post about it.

However, i do have to agree that it would be much nicer if people did have a balanced and justified argument. Debate can do so much good for people's minds. We hear their true feelings and we're made to really think about what they are saying. But as soon as we get into short, arrogant and biased argument, we just get flaming.

Bungie allows many complaints in the various Halo 2 forums. They are not taking away the right of free speech when they lock threads that contain flaming, spam, or incoherent dribble. Bungie does provide this service free of charge, therefore, they can do whatever they want. Although I have mentioned many times the problems found in the Halo 2 campaign, my comments weren't locked because I was negative. Furthermore, bungie.net allows us to join 25 private groups including ones that are hostile toward some of the public forums and/or moderators. We may disagree with the mods over the degree to which rules should be applied and and/or punishments, but bungie is justified in locking threads and protecting their corporate interests. There is no such thing as a completely objective viewpoint. Complainers are just as biased as mods are. These are excellent forums and we should spend more time lighting a candle (or sticking a grunt) than cursing the darkness.

I really think it is funny how people online think that Halo 2 is so great, but then i come here and there are alot of complaints, but there is all those little posts mixed in by the immatures of the forums that say "You are complaining because you are a newb" or "shut up, you just arent great at the game like me"

The fact is, there are problems with the game, but Bungie just cannot fix them all. I know the game was a little rushed, and was a little too hyped, but that doesnt make the game any better or worse than what it really is. The game was a good attempt at a sequal. And certian people who play it just cant acknowledge the fact that the game, or bungie for that matter, isnt perfect, and things do go wrong. The PP/BR combo was an unexpected factor of the game. Superjumps were probably never thought to be used competetively. And Moding, well, i still think Bungie should have been prepared, but it really was somewhat of a first to get competetive modding on a console.

Despite all the things that are wrong with halo 2, it is a good game in itself. But too many people here blindly defend it with personal remarks, or the lack of knowledge of the original game. The members of the Halo 2 online community can be a little misguided sometimes, and for some reason cant take real logic when it is fed to them.
