"There are points in life where everything changes, and changes in a big way. The old sophistic texts refer to these points as synchrons. Synchrons supposedly tie great personalities and forces together. You can't predict or avoid them. Only rarely can you feel them. They are like knots creeping toward your string of time. Ultimately, they tie you to the great currents of the universe-bind you a common fate " - Bornstellar Makes Eternal Lasting

So do these synchrons apply to humans?

Were these Synchrons 'created' by the precursors or their predecessors?

But it states that these Synchrons tie great 'personalities' together. But in Johns' case who? Not Cortana because she isn't a living sentient being. And that means that these Synchrons are bringing John and someone else (another SPARTAN perhaps, kelly, Linda or Catherine).

And on the 'forces' note of things what if the last Precursor is out there and the Forerunners are still out there coming together with 117 and possibly the last of the Flood for one last throw of the dice that would be the deciding factor once and for all.

Or the craziest theory of all Halo lore; The Universe is an actual living thing that can make concious decisions to save its self from it's own doom.

Discuss.

I can honestly say I never thought about that. Interesting find.

And I also think that IF this is true. And Iris is introduced more, then Iris may be way older than Forerunner and precursor times.

It may be passed down secretive Knowledge of races, and might be the Mantle.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

So essentially, the Forerunner version of The Force?

  • 06.24.2011 1:05 PM PDT

I must say, 'bout time we had some theories regarding Cryptum other than about the Prisoner.

I think given what the Precursors thought, it would seem that in Halo there is some sort of universal consciousness that does not seem to be a part of the physical dimension or not in an obvious way.

Hmm, perhaps John's fate is now being tied into whatever other Champions of the Mantel (my own term) are out there or have previously existed in order to finish one final fight for the fate of the whole universe itself. Perhaps the creators of the Flood will be the villains. It could be that the Prisoner is not a Precursor at all is a sampling of all the Precursors fought and were holding back from the galaxy... *shrug* so many unknowns, needless to say I absolutely can't wait for Halo for and the rest of those new books coming out :D

It's older than Forerunner.

And who knows how deep this can go.

IRIS is during the war, we have references to both the didact and librarian.

And good job OP this is something nobody has touched on. I think like cobra suggested that this might be "halos version of the force" and that it might tie into "living time".

Well I was wrong on Iris.....

But these Synchrons take Halo to a whole new level.

Precursor technology certainly has some sort of intelligence or something similar since they could only be destroyed by the firing of a Halo, so they obviously had a vast understanding of sentience and the like, I would hazard a guess for it to be the best understanding of life and universe of any of the races the Halo story has encountered so far. It definitely sounds like from Cryptum that there could be a concept similar to the Force from Star Wars going on. Could be what all those voices Born was hearing from the Domain...my original thoughts for the voices were the voices of the Precursors speaking to him and giving vaguely prophetic warnings of the Forerunner's impending doom.

Good post.

I think a Huge twist would be if the Synchrons were created by an ancient being.

I don't want to satyr something like this off topic but.

you do not need to be sapient for the flood to infect you it is more of a bonus factor. As long as you have the following

A)enough calcium

b)enough biomass

C) a central nervous system

D) a spinal cord

you can be infected, the flood will not pass up if if you are not sapient, hence the librarian moving all life to the ark pre galactic halo plan

the rings that were used in cryptum did not have the same purpose the second batch did. they were super weapons against the flood used in solar systems.

while the precursor structures are and are not sapient they were only destroyed due to the negation of neural physics. in which people inferred that their tech is based off neutrinos or something of the like.

Yeah, I know that sentience is not required for the Flood to infect someone, I glanced through Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor while at a friend's house one time and all those creatures wouldn't have been sentients before infection so yeah.

I guess I didn't word what I was trying to say properly :/

Why do you say the Halo's are different? I've only read the book once, rereading it now, but I didn't really get the impression the Halos we saw in Cryptum were any different from the 7 Halos of the games, I'll keep a lookout for something that would indicate that in my current read-through, but I would like to hear what led you to that conclusion, knowing you and what you dig up it will probably be an interesting point.

The personality does not necessarily mean human and not necessarily mean alive. It could be a generation long act where one beings act is tied to another one.

Synchron on the other hand sound ancient even more ancient than the precursers. Could be there from the beginning of the universe.

I wonder if the Flood, Precursor and humanity's Synchrons will meet for one last epic battle in Halo 6.
