Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I was going through the job listings for Bungie and came across a hiring for a "Player Investment Designer". Then when I looked at the description and one sentence stuck out to me.

"Do you dream about creating worlds imbued with real value and [u]consequence?[url]"

Now the job may be referring to something such as achievements or something like Halo Reach's armory. However the 'consequences' part makes me think otherwise. For example with Halo there were no real consequences no matter what you did the outcome was always the same. However in RPG's and MMO's your actions have consequences, which leads me to belive that Bungie's next game may be an RPG or MMO.

Left here a long time ago.

Perhaps an MMOFPS?

This.

Seriously though, I'm certain it's going to be an MMO of sorts, but what type of MMO is left to question. We will know soon enough.

Whoo.

I'm rather sure it's just a FPS.

I mean firstly they said "They're going to stick to what they know" which is Console FPS.

But they want to go multiplatform and I'm pretty sure they'd want to go PC so just FPS.

Why not a MMO?
Well can you think of one sucessful console MMO?

Because I can't, and only one has passed my "cloud of ignorance" which only passed it because a friend of a friend was playing the demo.

Also I think you're reading too far into the job listing.
Also depends on what is defined as "consequence" you could define that from your screen reddening when you're getting shot to the length of a respawn to ranking down in the ranking system to suffering from the Quit/Mute/Credit bans.

Exactly why there's an open market opportunity for it.

Actually, with the amount of people they have hired lately, it would make sense for them to be developing and MMO, and I have a few people in the industry that have hinted towards me that that is what it is.

And just because no console MMO has been largely successful before does not mean that Bungie can't develop one that can. It's the same situation with Halo - it revolutionized the console FPS and brought it to real popularity on consoles.

Why can't they do the same with an MMO?

Dammit.
Why do you have to make a good point!

Grawwwghfrafgehs!

Although I'm pretty sure the reason console MMOs aren't sucessful is that MMOs aren't really a game for the console crowd, they don't feel the need to play games every single day to rank up, they don't want to pay a secondary monthly subscription just to play a game.

Not to mention Reach's ranking/credit system didn't go down too well and Halo 3's EXP system didn't have a purpose and MMOs are really something you play more with a mouse/keyboard than a controller.

There's some hurdles of innovation to jump.

What I mean is as obessively as MMO players.

Not all MMO players are obsessed with playing alot to rank up, while alot of console players do (hello Halo: Reach and Call of Duty).

I'd say it's an equal balance, and there's no real force saying you have to play everyday if you want to rank up. You can play without eating or showering for a few days, or you can play occasionally.

  • 06.25.2011 1:39 AM PDT

Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

I think it's an MMOFPS. Whatever that is.

I'm just saying, a lot of MMOs are just about non-stop grinding, for instance I played even online for about half a year and even though that game has a leveling system that you cannot really alter the speed of just by playing (you can buy implants but thats it) you still have to grind the crap out of missions/null sec ratting just to get enough money to fly that new ship you've been training months for or to go out on a PVP roam with your buddies.

Hell after 6 months of playing I had to grind multiple hours a day just to support my account with nullsec ratting which is one of the best ways to get money (you can pay for your subscription in game which is a very awesome feature I think more MMOs should include) and I couldn't sustain the interest to make sure I logged on once a day and swept all the systems belts for several hours.

That's the thing: they don't have to be.

I'm sure they could come up with a more simplified system that is approachable by the mainstream console audience. Now that I think of it, could Reach's armory and credit system have been a currency and ranking test for a possible MMO project?

Hmm... Interesting theory.

I'm just sayin', Bungie needs to make the "Halo" of MMOs of the console world.

Which ain't too easy, granted making Halo gives them some good credit in that regard but it still ain't easy. :P
