I've been adamant for a while that Nylund's books have so many internal inconsistencies that they can't be used as a trial-by-fire for other canon's (*cough*, Reach) integrity.
...wow, that sentence made me sound like a pretentious twat, but I still don't think that TFoR is infinitely greater than Halo: Reach (which is the big throw-around for Forum Topics, it seems).
Granted, it's a nice story that it tells, but it's all over the place in the dates department and comes across with a "meh" writing style.

This is moronic.
The first ever piece of canon material in Halo was the novel TFOR, a month before CE came out. By the end of 2001 we knew the story of Reach and how it coincided with CE, Bungie called it canon and asked Nylund and various other writers to create stories that would also be canon.
The lore was nicely slotted in with very few minor retcons, it was like that for almost 9 years... Then Reach came out.Mind if I point out that it slots nicely because, as pointed out, it was the first published media for Halo? It's kind of hard to clash with, well, nothing.
I've said all I can, so I'm going to let this post get dissolved by you blokes while I sleep... enjoy.
