Object Overload is achieved one of two ways
1) Killing your teammate hundreds of times and picking up his dropped weapon (therefore dropping yours)
2) Killing hundreds of enemies and picking up there weapons (therefore dropping yours)
One of the Bungie Dev team explains how this works. There are certain items in Halo which are disposable corpeses, dropped enemy weapons, etc. These are the items that disappear to help make room for new objecst. Well it just so happens they decided not to make any weapon you drop one of these items. As a matter of fact the weapon you drop is on the high priority list of things to disappear last.
So what happens is you drop so many weapons Halo has no more room to load new objects. You know you've reached this point when no more projectiles come from weapons. It literally will take hours in SP to do this. It can be done quicker in co-op because your not dependent on bad guys.
That is my down and dirty explanation.
Check HERE for the official explanation.
