I actually don't think he needs to have any change at all, not really anyway. His character might change a bit by us getting to know him more, and thus our interpretations of him, but I don't think 343i will do anything too drastic with him.
I don't think they'll really be changes in character except in way of growth due to figuring out his destiny as savior of the whole universe or something like that.
But really I'm ok with anything as long as it's not too much of a departure from the down-to-earth, no nonsense sensibility and the dry, witty humor we've all come to know and love from the previous games. And of course they're not allowed to ever show his face, that is a taboo.
I agree with this.
I'll add my own spin to it as well. If they suddenly add character to the chief that would be out of character. For the past decade he's been a stoic character as a result of being breed as the ultimate solider.
Suddenly him having a breakdown and engaging in social activities for the sake of character development in Halo 4, would not be the right way to go in my opinion. If anything, they need to develop the characters and settings around him, in which the chief reacts like how he usually reacts.
Like a bad-ass who can take on anything.
Not every Spartan is a Kurt. That's what made Kurt stand out.
I say this because Kurt was arguably the only Spartan that had any real character. Bar Jorge which was poorly done.
No one's saying he needs to be a Kurt. There ways to devolope characters without resorting to the sociable father figure type.
The Chief in the books is always depicted as, yes being a great leader, calm and resolute, but internally scared all the time, being forced to make decisions he doesn't know how to deal with, and even, as the Encyclopedia states, being traumatized by the events surrounding him.
No one's asking for an Emo Peter Parker *shudders* but rather to get the know the Chief's character more as presented in the book. The whole thing about "you are the Chief" is pointless and ineffective now that the books are out, he has a name now both in game and in the expanded media, we can hear a voice that isn't ours behind the helmet, and his personality is not ours.
So the only other way to go is to explore how the books presented him. Frank O'Connor already said both his armor and somne of his behaviors have changed due to what's happened to him. So he will change as a real character.
