Subject: So how will John change?

"The measure of a man is what he does with power"-Plato

He was always quiet and a man of few words.

Personally I think he'll get more reckless or even agitated and angry.

I may seem to come across as a -blam!-, but I'm really just trying to help.

As long as they don't remove his helmet I'm game for almost anything.

Speaking of chuckles, let's all lol at IonicPaul, who makes friends with bugs to make up for his lack of human contact.

You saw my opinions in my thread. I stand by them.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Probably has PTSD or something. Hopefully they do well showing it, though.

Nah, 'Chief always keeps a cool head.

I just hope 'Chief gets more dialog. I enjoy hearing his simple (he is not an intellectual), yet common sense, down to earth opinion about things.

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

Hopefully he's not a brick wall of a character anymore and act more like he does in the books.

I actually don't think he needs to have any change at all, not really anyway. His character might change a bit by us getting to know him more, and thus our interpretations of him, but I don't think 343i will do anything too drastic with him.

I don't think they'll really be changes in character except in way of growth due to figuring out his destiny as savior of the whole universe or something like that.

But really I'm ok with anything as long as it's not too much of a departure from the down-to-earth, no nonsense sensibility and the dry, witty humor we've all come to know and love from the previous games. And of course they're not allowed to ever show his face, that is a taboo.

I agree with this.

I'll add my own spin to it as well. If they suddenly add character to the chief that would be out of character. For the past decade he's been a stoic character as a result of being breed as the ultimate solider.

Suddenly him having a breakdown and engaging in social activities for the sake of character development in Halo 4, would not be the right way to go in my opinion. If anything, they need to develop the characters and settings around him, in which the chief reacts like how he usually reacts.

Like a bad-ass who can take on anything.

Not every Spartan is a Kurt. That's what made Kurt stand out.
I say this because Kurt was arguably the only Spartan that had any real character. Bar Jorge which was poorly done.

No one's saying he needs to be a Kurt. There ways to devolope characters without resorting to the sociable father figure type.

The Chief in the books is always depicted as, yes being a great leader, calm and resolute, but internally scared all the time, being forced to make decisions he doesn't know how to deal with, and even, as the Encyclopedia states, being traumatized by the events surrounding him.

No one's asking for an Emo Peter Parker *shudders* but rather to get the know the Chief's character more as presented in the book. The whole thing about "you are the Chief" is pointless and ineffective now that the books are out, he has a name now both in game and in the expanded media, we can hear a voice that isn't ours behind the helmet, and his personality is not ours.

So the only other way to go is to explore how the books presented him. Frank O'Connor already said both his armor and somne of his behaviors have changed due to what's happened to him. So he will change as a real character.

Aren' authors like Nylund, Karren Traviss, and Greg Bear working so closely with 343i they're virtually employees?

I know Nylund might as well be considered one. On almost everything associated with 343i I've seen he's been in it.

I'm sorry I have to disagree about John 117's intellect. Just read Fall of Reach and you will understand that he is very smart. He can do advanced Calculus in his head!

I expect the decades of military service will take their toll on John. The fact he couldn't save his closest friends from death, and that Cortana is clearly becoming Rampant - though he always ignored the signs. All of this could make John frustrated and angry, possibly even psychotic to some extent. Then of course, he discovers he needs to save the Universe from an ancient threat - perhaps it's all too much for him.

Perhaps John is going insane.

I'm pretty sure that Spartans had augmentations done to their brains that represses things such as PTSD symptoms and other emotions. They can still feel them, but no one can tell. If John really does have some sort of emotional breakdown in H4, I think it'll be more from years of repressed stress coming out than Cortana going Rampant.

He's got an IQ north of 160. No recorded spartan has ever had one less then 160.

Some of the IIIs had 170 or higher

His character is already established; he isn't changed. I think the real question is how changed 343 will portray him as. If I elaborated on what I suspect 343 will make him look like, I'd be attacked by all the new-thought, 343-accepting followers, so I'll just keep that thought reserved until I actually see it in the game.

All of the spartans had very high IQs. If 343 is going to expand his character, I personally want some (not a whole lot) of dialogue outside of cutscenes, a la ODST.

I think John will succumb to rage.

I think John angry and hell-bent on destruction will make him terrifying to his opposition.

Yes, just yes...to most of that anyway.
They need to tread carefully with whatever they decide to try and improve on. They need to make sure that it's still in line with what has already been established as John's character, suddenly having him become very emotional would be far too jarring and departing way too far from his original characterization. As long as they stay true to what John has been for the past ten years I'm completely open to what 343i might do.

However what most of the people posting ideas for changes/evolution to/of Chief's character would not be a good idea, they just don't fit what has been established already as John's character and personality.
