Imagine a triangle. It's perfect, but a little plain. You take a chisel, and carve a small decorative symbol into it to make it a little more interesting. People like it, but it could use a little more.
So you then take a sledgehammer..

No. By "finishing the fight" you mean a lame ending to a retarded campaign that resulted in another cliffhanger and unnecessary deaths of two, awesome supporting characters. You are correct about the sword, however h3 introduced a new sword: double melee. Ridiculous, two-hit kill, infinite ammo fist of mass destruction. CQC maps were never so predictable, dull, and flat out moronic.
The H2 shotgun and h3's shotgun have no range due to balance. If the shotguns had long range and kept their damage they'd be ridiculous. If they had long range but no damage it'd be a waste of time. Due to h3's mind-numbingly slow paced gameplay the shotgun rendered the sword and hammer borderline useless. I'd also like to add the H1 shotgun had good range and had decent damage at said range.
h3 definitely did not combine the best elements of the previous games. Let's look; H1 and H2 had good weapon diversity. Dual wielding wasn't entirely useless thus the PR, SMG, and even the needler could be successfully used. In H1 the AR and PR also saw action. The needler was the only lacking weapon in H1 yet it could be used. h3 saw a bunch of reskinned ARs with more disadvantages.
The spiker had a stupidly short range due to a retardedly unrealistic bullet drop. The PR isn't hitscanned which means shorter range and a lot of missed shots even at close ranged. Dual wielding isn't a viable option since, if I recall correctly, the weapons become weaker when dual'd plus you lose melee and grenades. As I said before, melee is ridiculously OP in h3 and h3 made kamikaze plasma sticking infamous, so dual wielding gives you a lot of disadvantages and didn't help the game's terrible weapon balance.
Another thing h3 butchered: vehicles. As if the lock-on rocket wasn't enough they added the laser. In any map with the laser, which was ALL(correct me if I'm wrong) of the major vehicle maps, vehicles were worthless. The laser was either hitscan or very close to hitscan and resulted in the instant death of anything it touched. Before you say the laser pointer balances it out: it doesn't. You can do a number of things to hide it, such as aiming behind the target and than flicking to it or aiming at an object close to you, then flicking to the target. With vehicles you can't even respond to the pointer. You're target is so big and it has to just graze you in order to kill you that you're better off getting out of the vehicle and bunny hopping away.

I could go on in more detail as to why h3 is terrible and is inferior to H2, H1, and(imo) reach but this wall is already big enough and my opinion has been made obvious. This is all my humble opinion, of course.

Not even close. Halo 3 finished the fight and had the best elements of Halo 1 and 2 combined. The weapons like the sword and sniper were not overpowered and the shotgun was actually useful to counter the sword. A shotgun that can't shoot five feet. C'mon in real life they can shoot 300 yards.
I stopped when you called saving earth from a covenant invasion and stopping the flood from spreading into the universe a cliffhanger.
Wow. First, you didn't do either of those things, and second it was a cliffhanger. Not as bad as 2's, but still a cliffhanger.
