Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

I'm sure that most of the die-hard Halo or Bungie fans are already aware of the fact that Halo and Marathon take place in the same timeline. And if you're one of the few who're unaware of such claims, let me be the first to show you this.

There's already been possibly accurate leaked information on an unknown Bungie copyright named "Destiny". And if you're like me, you'd assume that this is most likely the title for Bungie's next big game.

My assumption is that the two universes of Marathon and Halo will tie in some how. I'm not exactly sure how they'll do it, or even if it'll happen at all. But it sounds like a really cool idea to me. Having the Master Chief fight Pfhor, and having Recon Number 54 fight Grunts and Elites.

I think the first hint to the project will be some sort of message or action that happens in Halo 4 which will connect to something that happened in Marathon. 343 Industries will then make a new Halo title that will make the player fully aware of the clear connection between the Covenant and the Pfhor.

All of this is just a theory, and is no way proven.

Brains beats brawn get used to it

Fear the Red Comet

Variety is the spice of life.
Long live games.
Death to all fanboys.

It's been proven that Halo and Marathon are not connected. End of story.

Easter eggs have nothing to do with canon.

But... all the connections. The UESC, various Marathon logo's, player armor and weapons.

Where have you heard of this?

Stopped there. Not true.

My God... is that seriously not true? Man do I feel stupid.

Heh it's a popular theory, and yes there are a lot of references between the two, but I believe Bungie stated they are not connected beyond easter eggs.

This.
They may have just been saying that because they do not own the rights for halo any more:P
It's cool to think that they are connected, just don't expect either Bungie or Microsoft to officially say that they are.
It's not going to happen in game.

It's ok Tycho, everyone who is interested in both Marathon and Halo try to connect the two universes at some point. We have all done it.

On the surface, there seem to be many connections and coincidences. Similar characters, weapons, enemy forces comprised of different alien races, dissent leading to revolution and civil war between those alien races, and ancient extinct races of enigmatic and seemingly all-powerful aliens behind it all. A quick glance at the Marathon timeline will even show that century from 2500 - 2600 (the time during which Halo takes place) was "intentionally left blank". One would think it possible to fit the events of Halo neatly into Marathon's timeline and universe.

However a closer inspection of both the Marathon and Halo timelines will reveal precise contradictions which clearly illustrate that both stories cannot simultaneously coexist in one universe. The two most common and most damning contradictions are found in technologies unique to each universe.

Faster Than Light Travel
The first contradiction involves the technology of faster than light (FTL) travel. Everyone knows that in Halo, FTL travel is possible by using Slipspace. According to the Halo timeline, the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine was created in 2291. By 2310 FTL travel was being used to start colonies. By 2390, colonization of the Inner Colonies was fully underway. By 2468, Outer Colonies were being settled. By 2490, the colonization boom was well underway and human space encompassed more than 800 worlds.

A quick study of Marathon's timeline will reveal a very different story. The conversion of Mars' moon Deimos into the Colony Ship Marathon began in 2408. It was completed 64 years later in 2472. It took the Marathon 300 years to travel from Sol to Tau Ceti (a distance of 12 light years). Obviously the Marathon was not equipped with FTL travel capability.

It is unconscionable that a colony ship would be built without FTL travel capability 117 years after the discovery of the FTL travel engine and during the golden age of FTL travel driven space exploration and colonization. Therefore it is not possible that the Halo and Marathon stories exist in the same universe.

Teleportation Technology
According to the Marathon timeline, teleporters began to be used in Sol as early as 2319. The Marathon, which was constructed from 2408 - 2472 was equipped with teleportation technology.

In the Halo universe teleportation technology was still unknown to humanity in 2552, 233 years after it was being used in Sol in the Marathon universe.

FTL travel and teleportation technologies are both unique to their respective universes and of primary importance in the telling of each story. These technological contradictions are irreconcilable, and therefore prove that the Marathon and Halo universes cannot be one in the same.

The desire to connect Marathon and Halo is something every fan of both games has to deal with at some point. While the two universes may seem consistent, a detailed investigation will reveal irreconcilable contradictions. I just wish more people were interested in exploring and discussing the similarities and contradictions rather than simply spouting the "because Bungie said so. /thread" mantra, which by itself is far from convincing and does not encourage further discussion.
