Subject: A twist on new moderation. Forum ninja lite version.

I'm not really interested.

I totally agree we need more moderators, just not more forum ninjas.

Based on this quote from Achronos the possiblity of a new type of moderation crew is a real.

I'm sure you've heard the idea of shadow mods, who basically patrol the forums silently, looking for trouble makers who they calmly deal with.

Right now I think the main hurdle in creating more true forum ninjas is the task of finding mature, sensible, trust worthy, and active members.

Adding some "lite" mods would bypass some of those hurdles. Thy wouldn't be put in a place where they have to make judgement on bans, and basically exist for the extreme rule breaks, not to micro manage.
The type of mods I'm suggesting have 5 powers basically under their belt.

The lock thread tool. Easy enough to explain. If they wish they can report the locked thread to a mod for judgement on banning the OP or those who replied to excessive spam. Used only in extreme cases, most of the time the OP would be reported individually for rule breaking posts.

That brings us to the next point, the report post button. Basically a beeffier, more important function of the report tool, which the shadow mods send a post to a moderator for review and judgement. Things like bypassing the profanity filter, extreme foul language, or flaming someone.

However, for those who insist on their dastardly ways, the shadow mods have the revoke posting priviledges tool. Shock site spamming, or spamming anything in general can be met by revoking the user's posting privileges for 45 minutes, as well as the case being sent to a moderator.

The warning funcition, which someone makes a small goof they are warned as normally happens. No further moderation required.

The edit tool. Not that hard to understand.

As you can see, the amount of power they havenin their hands is very limited, but they are easily equipped to handle any trouble on the forum.

With the addition of 15-20 "lite" mods like this I truly believe bungie.net will be a lot more tame. The gaps in moderation is presence will be alot smaller, as well as avoiding the logistics that come with adding full on mods.

What do you think?

Shhhh.

They may already be here.

*closes a box over his head*

OT:
The need will arise from the old bungie to the new i would imagine since being that the game forums will go away and add more to the future of bungie.

With the end of halo comes the end of the need for old style stuff. New items will have to be made and people who can moderate will be needed. Im sure that Achronos will fill the gaps with who he believes is best.

^^^ You bring up a point. Bnet isn't really going to be Halos home anymore, which in theory means we will need less moderators, at least for a time.

I don't always ban people but when I do I laugh uncontrollably...that's if I was a Forum Ninja.

Truth is a matter of perception.

The Button

Like sparten110 said, we really won't need as many mods since Halo won't be under Bungie anymore. Which means the game forums might be read only or deleted soon.

As far as the topic of needing moderation, when aerospace/their new ip is revealed, there will be alot of traffic and naturally, more trouble.

Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty. Duty is the essence of manhood.
-George S. Patton

Just to keep everything in check, new moderators would be great. But I'm not saying theres anything wrong with the moderators Bungie.net already possesses, i'm just saying that it's always great to have back-up.

I may seem to come across as a -blam!-, but I'm really just trying to help.

Seeing Halo is getting the official send off from the sight on the 7th there will most likely be a reduced number of Halo spammers and Reach complainers.

Until the new game gets announced, which most likely won't happen for a long time, the forums will simmer down a bit. So I don't really see a need for new Mods/Ninjas for the time being.

But that's just my opinion.

Devils advocate here. Arguably the increase in traffic won't be as high as the traffic they got after Reachs launch. While more mods would've been nice when it launched we got by. You also have to think of how many people we are going to lose once Halo is gone and comapre it to the increase we are going to get from aerospace.

The Guys with the forum ninja titles i think are like representatives and role models. I agree with the "Shadow Mods" idea if they are undercover, because we don't need any more role models, I think we have plenty.
If anything go through an interview process with mythics and give some of them moderator powers.
Mythics are always about, 99% of the time they're just as mature as ninjas, and people respect them. what better candidates?

.

The last batch of mods was in 2009. The release and announcement of Reach. It's been two years since the latest batch of ninjas, and with a major announcement coming soon, breaking in and preparing the new batch of ninjas soon wouldn't be un heard of.

...I honestly can't come up with anymore decent reasons not to do something like this. I'd keep argueing the Halo decrease deal but it looks like the new IP will be launched before Halo is "gone" from Bnet.

I would be happy with some people on this site who I know are younger being a moderator above some other particularly petty people.

I would love that. It was always a dream of mine to help Bungie patrol their site. Hopefully if this happens, my bans won't get in the way.

I'm pretty sure Achronos is referring to finding a way to which the community can moderate itself. The report button was a step in the right direction for that.

That is probably true, but what are your own opinions on this idea?

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time.

I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

If there is going to be a new form of moderation, it's not going to be "shadow mods". It's important for the community to know who the moderators are; it creates less confusion. A new form of moderation will probably be something along the lines of a janitor. Where they can give warnings, lock threads, and submit ban requests to the moderators. From there the moderators can review the ban request and accept/decline it, add on to it, etc.

Well from the looks of this, it seems like these lite mods would have a decent amount of tools at their disposal to begin with. Therefore, you might as well make these guys regular moderators.

The problem I see here is a time lapse. You have one set of mods freezing accounts and then fowarding the issue to another set of mods when the second set could simply be banning people themselves. However, this is a bit like an assembly line, which does tend to speed up the production of goods. So perhaps it could speed up moderating. Don't really have one side on this because it hasn't been done before. But I would lean towards no.

"If the given options aren't fixing things, invent a new option."

I agree that the report funcition was a great addition, but there will always be the need for true moderation. I don't see the community really ever graduating to needing only a few mods to watch the report queue.

Edit: acnboy64: As I see it, they wouldn't hide their identity. They merely have limit tools designed to keep the forums clean.
