Subject: The Chief Is Getting Old

Hey guys.

I recently bought the Master Chief firefight voice in Reach and I kept noticing something. Occasionally while playing firefight the Chief would make a grunting noise when he jumped or something of that nature. He also would randomly cough and hack through some of the battles.

Theoretically he's around his late 30's (correct me if I'm wrong) around the events of Halo 3. This means he will be even older in Halo 4. I was just thinking why Bungie had added those little grunts and coughs in the firefight voice.

Maybe they were hinting at something for the next game? Some of the Bungie members did go to 343i, so they would know about it.

Anyway this is just something I noticed. It could easily mean nothing. Comment or speculate.

I may seem to come across as a -blam!-, but I'm really just trying to help.

The very few that went over to 343i left a little while before ODST came out(I believe don't quote me on that) so I wouldn't try to connect the two.

They're just battle grunts, everyone does em.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

Grunting noses are for rolling and what not.
When did he cough?

Um i think chief is actually in his 40s, but is like 20 biologically due to cry, thus he would not be any older in halo 4.

johnsons was like 70 something but really around 40.

I just heard him cough randomly throughout the firefight.

And you are right about the cryo.

Forgive me for saying so, but even with augmentations I would find it hard to jump in armor that weighs a ton.

The armor feels like the weight of a feather, according to the books. It's a second skin to them. The suit plus the augmentations make moving and jumping as easy as running and jumping without it. Maybe even easier.

In one of the Halo books, "The Fall of Reach", the prelude says something like one of the Spartans jumped over their cover and the half-ton armor made no sound when they stepped on the rock. I find that hard to believe.

I think it is entirely plausible that John isn't going to be alive at the end of Halo 6. I wouldn't say it is related to his age - though he could be considered old, due to his numerous years of military service. This, in itself, could explain his deteriorating mental condition and behavioral changes.

42 years old isn't old.

Plus he's a SPARTAN. His health will be exceptional, nothing will slow John down.

If you drop a feather and a bowling at the same time in a vacuum, they will land at the same time. I would doubt that there would be literally no sound, as there would be some vibrations, but seeing as the spartans are totally in control of their armor, they would be very stealthy. Also, to the OP: when he coughed, was your health low?

there may be a hidden side effect of the armour or the flood infection if any in him may have been killed of could be affecting him in slight ways. maybe something happened when the ark blew up. might have effected him.

Mjolnir doesn't have shields. 117 is that badass projectiles think "-blam!- this" and they move at the last second.

me want the reconz please

Reach takes place before the Halo trilogy so we're actually playing as Cheif before CE. His dialog contradicts that, though.

His dialogue is easter eggs, references, and meant to be funny. Why else would you buy his voice?

@Spartan117cah: Read page 250 of the first book "The Fall of Reach" from the first paragraph to the last paragraph on the page.

@II Cipher: In the first book of the Halo series The Fall of Reach on page 249 Paragraph 1 Dr. Halsey herself states that the armor they were putting on John was the REAL MJOLNIR. :3

@X Arcan3 fury X: Yup. = w =b

Yes I am a Halo nerd but my girlfriends loves it. ^^

I think John's in his late 40's or early 50's

  • 06.27.2011 3:40 PM PDT

Bacon for all !!!!!!!!!!!111111111111

i think he is around 40, but cryo keeps you young

  • 06.27.2011 3:45 PM PDT

Kill first! Run later.

I think he will be able to make it through the next trilogy, cause if Ubisoft can make Ezio a 50yr old kick ass in the the new assassins creed i'm sure master chief can handle some more bad guys, well being trained from the age of 6 and augmentations and everything including cryo.

"Halo! Its divine wind will rush through the stars, propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation."

He's 42 by the end of Halo 3.
