I dont know if anyone is planning on making groups better anytime soon, but an idea is to make the forums more scoped out. More in depth sort of. For example...Bnets forums have The Flood, New Mombasa, zanzibar, etc. What if the founder (or he/she who has the high enough rank) could make more than one forum for a more detailed group, possibly making it more active. You could have a limit of like 7 forums or whatever. One for off-topic disussion, one for the chapters clan, one for upcoming events, one for contests etc...you get the picture. I just think that this would be an awesome idea especialy for multi-themed groups.

Does having factions, like ODST, achieve some of the benefits of this suggestion? Multiple forums would be nice, but I doubt it will happen any time soon.

I donno. If we had too much more stuff, it would be more like a site than a group.

Its a good idea, but 7 is definately a stretch. Maybe 3, because more than that won't be used well. I know that i've wanted something like that for awhile, but if that were done, then someone might step up the bnet forums...right?

Blondbeard who was one of the tempary employees developing the "new hotness" for bungie chapters had said that there was origionally plans to have more than one forum however it became inevitible that only 1 was needed. Many chapters have a dead forum anyways.

true, but alot would benefit from having seperate forums. Like OFG, for example would benefit greatly if there were one forum for posting and discussing fanfics only, while the other thread was a chapter thread, where the discussions would be based around other stuff. It would be something that would start out slow but catch on eventually.

Like if you look at the HBO fanfic forums, there are 3 forums...although i think we would be fine with just two, it would definately benefit the group if the option were available.

Indeed, 7 does seem odd. It was just an example. But 3 sounds good.

...please do not use dead groups as an example. There are plenty of very active groups in the 7th. And many that would benefit from it.

Ok, so this has been suggested before and it would be pretty awsome in my opinion. But here's a few things:

1: Having the option for every chapter/group to have multiple forums is going to take up a lot of sever space and slow this site down again.

2: If you really think about it, only very active chapters that have quite a few active members are going to benifit from it. For most chapters, i think one forum is more than enough.

3: I know it's up to the founders to sort this out, but i'm willing to bet it'll encourage people to spam more.

I'm sure there are other problems with it, but i can't think of them right now. So basically, if the web team can make it happen i'll be very happy too, however, i doubt it's going to happen for a long time if at all due to all the problems that come with it.

Very true. I didnt even think about the server.

  • 02.20.2006 2:48 PM PDT

how would it affect the servers? that's like saying that me typing this is going to slow them down just the same. You do realize that if bungie decided to make a new forum here, that the site wouldn't crash, right?

and if its just for groups, then it would be like making another group. there wouldn't be an extensive amount of memory taken to add another forum in for chapters, just as it isn't a problem to make a new chapter every day. And as Achronos said awhile back, they have plenty of space, and for those chapters who are active enough to use extra forums extensively, it would only benefit them.

It wouldn't take up much more server space , because all the forum posts are stored in a SQL database. Which can be ultra large . If it did slow the site down it would be like .00000000000001 seconds , if that much. It would have to load a extra link, and if you could have a diffrent background that also. You would notice it on the server if they added it.

Well i don't know what they have now, but i remember when they had trouble with bugs and the site was slowed down. Ok, so if they have enough space then fine. But as you point out, it would benifit active chapters probably with multiple needs. As much as i hate to say it, there really aren't an awful lot of those kinds of chapters/groups.

You shouldn't worry about storage space. Storage space is cheap. The forums database is about 5 or 6 gigabytes, and the portal (content/account) database is slightly smaller. Both combined are still dwarfed by the gigantic database that hold the stats data.

However this would only be fully appreciated in a few groups.

I can see myself using two forums. Then again, as aforementioned, not many chapters would use it.

well, that's probably not true. I bet almost all groups will use it. The amount of groups that used it both well and properly, however...

Considering many groups are either inactive or poorly cared for, I doubt the second forum would be used much - many group founders would overlook it.

Only the paranoid will survive!

Everyone used to worry about slowing the site down back in the day, although our fears were probably unfounded then as well, but those days are over I think. However, I can't imagine this being worth the effort. The same answer I give to a lot of other suggestions is that there are more important things.

which, as we pointed out before, isn't a problem. And to tell the truth, most chapters, in their current state, are a waste of space. So adding another forum for people to possibly use won't change anything.

Good idea, I know a number of groups who have more than one chapter just so they can have more forums.

Three would be a good number to start with.

Proven wrong again....plenty of server space! yay, so whats the problem?

I understand that chapter changes/upgrades are far odd, and this is sort of far off the loop, but there is no reason why this is not a strongly considered idea for the collum. I tons of groups that have the main group, another group for clan members, another for council, and other parts that fall into the 'multi-themed' category.

As I have traveled Bnet, and as you have pointed out, (I see no logical objections), this idea is a great idea that many groups would benefit from.

Also someone poitned out earliers that all this would do is give the chapters a more web site feel....well i doubt that. But if it did, than who cares? I would like that actually. A more home type of feeling on Bungie.net. yay.
