"Halo! Its divine wind will rush through the stars, propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation."

Drama.

To let some fresh air in? Why did John took off his helmet at the end of Halo CE, ask yourself that.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I remember reading about that too. Just another flaw with Reach...

  • 06.27.2011 8:50 PM PDT

Because LOL CHARACTER DRIVEN STORY.

That said, I still want to see John's face. Just once and I'll be happy.

Why would Carter need fresh air while being shot down in a Pelican?
Why would 6 need fresh air while being shot by Elites?

Most of the times they took off their helmets outside of combat. Six took off his/her helmet because it was already broken on the visor, so no use for it.

And as for Carter, one would think that he'd take off his helmet to not be so bothered, I mean, in most movies when somebody is mortally wounded or something, they always get their helmets taken off, meh.

In both cases their helmets were busted and inhibiting their vision.

6 took his helmet off because of the cracked visor and since he is wounded carter's armor and helmet where probably damaged plus dot was using his helmet speaker to tell him to get medical treatment he didnt have long and he knew it

John takes his helmet off, just not when there's imminent danger, which is pretty much the entire time we see him.

I notice during Halo Reach all the Spartans except for Emile will remove their helmets at one time or another. In one of the books I read they were trained to keep their helmets on and that one of the spartan IIs (I forgot who) preferred to vomit in his helmet than risk getting shot in the head.
Why would they take off their helmets? Especially at a criticle moment?

You're confusing the Spartan with a Spartan III in Ghosts of Onyx when after being teleported deep inside the Forerunner city thanks to Dr. Halsey, I don't remember which Spartan III get so sick after being teleported that he vomited with no chance to remove his/her helmet.

And only Spartans II ( with exception of Spartans II Gray Team) enjoyed so much being enclosed in their MJOLNIR armor.

Save Cortana

to get us more attached to the characters.

there's something about seeing a person eye to eye (literally) that makes you want to like/ trust them more. normally we tend to not trust those in masks/ other things that cover your face

Talk for yourself, I like more the Spartans that do not remove their helmets.

  • 06.27.2011 11:47 PM PDT

Spartan II's are different than Spartan III's. The Spartan II's were on a level of understanding with each other that most couldn't comprehend, and were literally able to visualize each other's emotions when their faces were shielded by visors. Now, the Spartan III's might not be so privileged.

And about the Master Chief... He had just prevented the Covenant from wiping all sentient life from the galaxy, all in the course of a few days, you don't think he deserved some fresh air?

This, also both Six and Carter knew they were gonna die. Carter was (a) mortally wounded (b) in an aircraft at low altitude, and Six was going on a last stand, and would then obviously discard his broken helmet.

As far as other times (namely, the end of New Alexandria) remember that they were in a heavily-monitored area where Covies were almost certainly tapping/jamming the comms. It makes sense.

When does it ever say Spartans where trained to "never remove their helms".

Taylor Gang! 420

Because if you notice in lone wolf your visor gets cracked you can't exactly see through that so uh DUH

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Didn't bug me all that much honestly.

Indeed. I actually felt that emile I connected with most. His "Get to the pelican, I've got this" was waaaay more believable than the majority of noble team, IMO. Or the scene at the beginning of new alexandia. It's a good moment between six and carter, and still portrays emotion even though neither removed their helmets-

All the times they have their helmets off they are out of combat, and the most likely reason Bungie had them with their helmets off so frequently is so we could get to know them better, you can read far more of a character if you can see their face and read their facial expressions as they talk than they can if they're inside a helmet all the time.

That was an SIII, and if I remember correctly they had just been warped into what would quickly become a combat zone, not a good idea to remove your helmet there.

As for Six and Carter removing their helmets before they died. I'd assume Carter romved his to improve his vision, he was coughing up blood, I'd assume the inside of his visor was completely smeared with it.

And with Six, her visor was completely ruined, and the cracks in it certainly threw me off quite a bit trying to fight with them there. And I think Six knew her death was near anyway, a broken helmet won't do you much good in a fight if you're already going to die.
