I notice during Halo Reach all the Spartans except for Emile will remove their helmets at one time or another. In one of the books I read they were trained to keep their helmets on and that one of the spartan IIs (I forgot who) preferred to vomit in his helmet than risk getting shot in the head.
Why would they take off their helmets? Especially at a critical moment?

All the times they have their helmets off they are out of combat, and the most likely reason Bungie had them with their helmets off so frequently is so we could get to know them better, you can read far more of a character if you can see their face and read their facial expressions as they talk than they can if they're inside a helmet all the time.

That was an SIII, and if I remember correctly they had just been warped into what would quickly become a combat zone, not a good idea to remove your helmet there.

As for Six and Carter removing their helmets before they died. I'd assume Carter romved his to improve his vision, he was coughing up blood, I'd assume the inside of his visor was completely smeared with it.

And with Six, her visor was completely ruined, and the cracks in it certainly threw me off quite a bit trying to fight with them there. And I think Six knew her death was near anyway, a broken helmet won't do you much good in a fight if you're already going to die.

Spartans are never to take their helmets off and the SIIIs had a hard time following this rule. This is more of another example of how they are different from the SIIs who take the job as their life while the SIIIs just see it as a job which ends at 9 PM.

It doesn't matter reach was under attack and the planet is a hotspot not to mention they were sitting in the middle of a city being "glassed".
both mark V and SPI had a system that washed the faceplate of any vomit, blood, etc. so that doesn't cover it.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Bungie did it to allow players to connect with Noble Team more, instead of seeing them as faceless heroes all the time like the Chief. They did this as much as possible with ODST as well.

However by doing so they neglected the audience who actually care about practicality and believability of warfare. This game was aimed for the casual audience, in every sense of the word. They dumbed down gameplay and story plot just so a greater majority of the population can jump in and understand it with minimal effort.

I don't remember this rule about never taking helms off ever...

Anyway, even if the inside of the visor was cleaned of blood/vomit/whatever... guess what? It'd still stink in there. Unless the helms come with an air freshener :X

And... if you complain about ODSTs/Spartans removing their helms and "ignoring the practicality of warfare." I must wonder if you complain about gears of war? Where literally everybody that doesn't show their face, dies in some way if possible,

Such a shame that this is the direction the gaming industry is going.

Gears of War isn't as canon intensive as Halo. Don't compare them two in terms of canon. I read both and arguably at this stage I enjoy Gears more so even though Halo is more grounded.

If you didn't read about the Helmet part than you didn't read the books. I'm not sure which one. There are many examples, even common sense. I remember one instance where a S-II puked in their helmet and they still kept in on. The internal filters helped clear it up but it was still a mess.

ODST was fine. As their visor de-cloaked instead.

It was stated in GoO and the helmet has air filters that would fix that.

nothing was ever said about ODSTs not taking helmets off, and am purely talking about spartans.

Cheers, I left my GoO book in my old place sadly. Never got to re-read it again. :(

to get us more attached to the characters.

there's something about seeing a person eye to eye (literally) that makes you want to like/ trust them more. normally we tend to not trust those in masks/ other things that cover your face
That was the idea.

Indeed. I actually felt that emile I connected with most. His "Get to the pelican, I've got this" was waaaay more believable than the majority of noble team, IMO. Or the scene at the beginning of new alexandia. It's a good moment between six and carter, and still portrays emotion even though neither removed their helmets-
I loved that moment between Carter and Six, at the beginning of New Alexandria. That whole opening sequence was pretty powerful. It's too bad they never explored the characters more, and provided more moments like that. I really wanted to feel devastated by the fate of Noble. It makes me a little frustrated thinking about the potential; which is why I'm so disappointed in Reach.

  • 06.30.2011 11:18 AM PDT

Sigh... I hear more and more and more people wishing Reach was an RPG, or RPG length campaign.

I do enjoy the occasional KOTOR and Mass Effect.
:)

But seriously this was just a discussion on the topic of Helmets, if you don't agree that's fine. But at least have an argument based on the Novel or other sources to justify your view if you push it further then just opinions.

It's a break in continuity. That's all it is. Some people don't like it. But in the end, it's just a shame that it happened. It's not serious business.

  • 06.30.2011 11:37 AM PDT

Well 6 took his off because it had a huge crack in it. Kat did because she had to get shot in the brain somehow.

Oh no, not refering to the helm bit with that line. It's more a poke at the "Noble Team wasn't developed enough." "I hate noble team because we didn't learn much!" basically asking a FPS campaign to deliver RPG character development levels, heck Halo 1-3 weren't stellar in that area either.

Anyway, onto helms... The thing I could see is removing the helm to get air without the filter, completely fresh. I just don't see Spartans as robots who would never remove their armor if they could. I mean, sure it has the cleaning thing and the air filters...

Because LOL CHARACTER DRIVEN STORY.

That said, I still want to see John's face. Just once and I'll be happy.

Well, Bootcamp shows John's face when he's a child and a teenager. Perhaps one of the upcoming FoR comics will finally show his adult face.

The Ban Hammer is all that was and all that will be! The Ban Hammer is time and space, life and death! The Ban Hammer can see into your mind! The Ban Hammer can see into your soouull....

They are Spartan III's, they are kids and less trained, about only 6 years training compared to Spartan II's who have a whole lifetime of training. Jorge only did it because he knew he was going to die, and wanted to express himself. When helmets are on, they are hard to express emotion through facial movements. In the books, Master Chief takes his armor off a couple times so he can relax.

  • 06.30.2011 1:50 PM PDT

Let your anger be as a monkey in a piñata... hiding amongst the candy... hoping the kids don't break through with the stick!

they were gonna die anyway, its so that they could see easier

Where was that stated? O_o 'cause I really don't remember reading that at all, the only time I remember seeing it is here on the forums :/

New Alexandria wasn't being glassed until the end cutscene of the level "New Alexandria" and they'd just pushed back the attack on the current center of UNSC operations in the city, they were not under any immediate threat and were inside the facility.
Really? I didn't remember that, in any case I am pretty sure that it would not be that affective of a cleaning job, Carter's visibility in the helmet would still not be optimal.

  • 06.30.2011 1:55 PM PDT

and they just like take them off like its easyer to c or somthing its like jesus the cheif never took his off and he survived 3 games u all took urs off and got pwned

It's hard to wear 24/7 full armor, it may be useful in combat situations, but humans often look for more comfort - especially in psychical matter. Taking off helmets is act of this - if it's not life threatening situation.
Injured soldiers often take off part of their equipment, because in that kind situations they feel limited, shackled by it.
In case of Carter he might be pissed off by DOT insisting in receiving medical care to him during chase-run combat situation.

Imagine that you are driving car and trying to escape from someone and on board computer in your car is telling you to slow down because of traffic rules, what would you do?

  • 06.30.2011 2:23 PM PDT

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Spartan II's would sooner die than remove their helmets (except Jorge apparently). Spartan III's weren't as crazy about it.

To let some fresh air in? Why did John took off his helmet at the end of Halo CE, ask yourself that.

Why would Carter need fresh air while being shot down in a Pelican?
Why would 6 need fresh air while being shot by Elites?

carter and 6 both took there helmets off because the had craked visors and couldnt see
