Subject: Why would they take off their helmets?

Sigh... I hear more and more and more people wishing Reach was an RPG, or RPG length campaign.
I never knew only RPGs could tell compelling stories and create interesting characters. My mistake.

No one's asking for RPG level development, but how about giving us something besides...well, basically nothing. If you're pitching the game as a more 'human' story, then, well, you need to create characters players care about. And you do that by giving them some substance.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Does no-one remember the bit when John comments that MJOLNIR was like every S-II's 2nd skin. They felt "naked" without it. Which was why they would be annoyed when Halsey could tell them apart even when they were in gear due to the slightest gestures because they looked identical to each other.
This was in The Fall of Reach

John never took it off, which was why he was shown as super pale in the novel "The Flood"

GoO expanded this further and showned the difference between MJOLNIR and SPI. How SPI could depolerize similar to the ODSTs.
And why they should never take their helmets off. Kurt choose the SPI for symbolic reasons to establish unity and morale with the S-III. This choice was important. The whole subject of armour was important in that novel.

I feel like me and a few others such as gray. Are the only one's who actually read the books here in this thread. Not only that, I feel like we're the only one referencing the novels as well to reinforce our opinion.

Everyone else is just saying: "I haven't heard of this... but my opinion is still more valid"

Answer:

Read the goddamn books.

Edit- Never thought I had to say this in a Universe Forum and I've been in and out of B.net for 6 years

Don't let fear of rejection stop you from going after what you want

To let some fresh air in? Why did John took off his helmet at the end of Halo CE, ask yourself that.

Why would Carter need fresh air while being shot down in a Pelican?
Why would 6 need fresh air while being shot by Elites?

They both knew that they were going to die, might as well die without your helmet on. I guess it just adds the effect of drama

Honestly, I felt Noble Team had more development overall then Master Chief did.

And no, I'm not saying that, but I see people asking/demanding to have lots character development in an FPS campaign. Johnson's character development? Took pretty much 2 entire games and a little bit of Halo CE. If we took any of the trilogy and looked at their character development honestly, there isn't a staggering amount.

The main trilogy was great because of its large scale, space opera, story. Those games were never pitched to us in the way Reach was. The character development in the trilogy wasn't anything special, but it was one of those things where you were just happy to have likable characters as you discover the mysteries of Halo.

I let Noble Six off, due to the fact he was supposed to represent the player. Much like the 'Chief, only more so ('Chief had more to him). Reach, like ODST, was meant to be a lot more intimate. Not focusing on numerous characters, and locations. It was focused on one planet, one tragic event, and Noble Team. They pushed this whole idea that players were gonna follow these believable characters through a tragic event. They took off their helmets, ok, cool; but then that's really as far as it went. For a more focused game, we got very little. Jorge was the best of the lot.

I just expected a more 'human' story. *sadface*

We fight for that which is lost in the hope that what is lost can be found.

There was a hole in his face, visor was cracked, maybe he couldn't see.
