Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

Hey, I posted this over at the Waypoint Forums. Thought everyone here would like to see it too.

Hey guys, I've got a pretty good idea here. Tell me if you like it!

If you've played Mass Effect 1 or 2, you'd know that there's this thing called "The Codex" which is essentially an encyclopedia. Here, the player can learn about the Mass Effect universe in detail. They can learn about the ships, the weapons, the different species of Aliens, and it's easily accessible from the Pause menu.

Now, I can't be the only one here who thinks this would be awesome in a Halo game can I?

Halo's universe is so big that a lot of people don't know where to start. This could be a summary of everything in the Halo universe, all accessed through the pause menu. There could be a timeline, similar to Halo Wars'. There could be information on the different species in the Haloverse (Who doesn't want to learn more about the Moa?), the history of the Spartans, Forerunners and the Covenant.

Like Mass Effect, it could be updated as the player plays through the game.

This would be extremley useful for anyone new to the franchise as well as people who would just like to learn about Halo's story overall. It'd be great to have it all in one place (Sort of like Halopedia, but with less mistakes).

I've got a perfect name for it too:

The Domain

What do you think?

Here's the thread: http://halo.xbox.com/forums/general/f/10/p/10605/85269.aspx#8 5269

So guys, what do you think? Good idea or not?

Halo's story is revealed during the campaign, if you want to know more, just listen carefully. I would probably only use this when I'm bored.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

Actually that's a fantastic idea, the Domain is an excellent name too (CRYPTUUUUMMMM!!!).

It would be a great way of informing people about critical events from the novels. This was semi-accomplished in Halo Wars with the black box timeline but a series of specific information on things like planets, faction, weapons etc would be a great addition to the series.

I'm backing this idea.

The Domain works beautifully as the name, given its nature. It could have some fancy Forerunner style interface, too. It's a step forward in providing those, who only play the games, with information they would never see. It could grab the attention of these people, and motivate them to dig deeper into the mythos.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It'd be nice to see everything tied together and put in one place. A lot of people enjoy the Halo games' story but they haven't read the books. This could be for people who are new to the story outside of the games or new to the Halo franchise altogether. I've been playing Halo for the whole 10 years and even I'd find it helpful.

Perhaps to add more replayability to the game, Domain entries could be hidden like data pads/audio logs/terminals. You'd have to scour different areas and maybe discover a computer where you plug Cortana in and she downloads it to the Domain.

It could also work from a story perspective. The Chief aquires some Forerunner device or whatnot that is important to the story and gives him Domain access.

Indeed. Perhaps it would work like the Subject 16 memory entries in AC 2 where some have to be decoded. The more I think about this idea the more I love it.

Hello! You may also know me as Ijnekono. How you have made your way here I do not know, but welcome. (:

Yeah, having, 'The Domain' would make the game much better for newcomers who haven't played the older games or read the books... Like me :) I think it would give fans better appreciation of the Halo series. Great idea.

Sounds awesome. This should be put on Waypoint for 343 to see.

Great Idea, I just don't want to see "The Domain" flashing at me when ever I pause.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

That is one of the more fantastic ideas I've heard for Halo 4's story. General info would be great, but if there are past Halo canon events, motion comics depicting them would be so boss.

It wouldn't be a huge pop up or anything, just another option on the pause menu.

Sounds great. It would be awesome if they implemented it.

My jokes, so I don't lose them (ignore this):
ZedFish's Opinion on Sgt. Foley.
ZedFish's Forerunner Rickroll.

While I haven't played Mass Effect, I'm guessing it'd work a little like the Database from Assassin's Creed?

If so, yes.
If not, explain, and I'll probably say yes.

I've only played the first Assassin's Creed (I don't think the database was in that).

Anyway, the Codex is basicly a database/encyclopdia. It'd be a bit like Halo Waypoint but would have articles on things within the actual Halo Universe.

Here's an example.

You can look at different Species, different ships, different planets... anything really. You collect Codex entries as you explore different planets and meet different species throughout the game.

It's not the most exciting thing to look at but I think it'd fit Halo really well.

etc.

I completely agree. I remember actually taking a good chunk of time to just read codex entries. Much like actually reading the books in. Morrowind.

Fantastic name and idea.
