This may sound like a stupid question which probably is. But what exactly makes them so different within the community? Just a simple answer will suffice.

Face your fear, then consume it to give yourself strength.

A true fan is someone who simply enjoys whatever the thing is (typically a game or console). A fanboy is someone that is obessesed with the game/console and bashes any other games/consoles simply because they can't accept competition to their own favorite.

Basically, Fans are the normal people and accepted among the community, while Fanboys are generally frowned upon because they tend to start Flame Wars or participate in them.

Ok cool, thanks for the answer. I was totally confused for a moment. But I once again understand the difference so thanks again.

Now selling HHDDVVDDBVDs. HD DVDs, but with better marketing.

I could have sworn they were the same thing, just from different perspectives. A True fan is a person who knows and enjoys a game more than the average person. A fanboy is that same person as seen by the average person, usually with some degree of disgust.

Fanboy shouldn't even be considered a legit term. After all, the only ones who say this term are the loud mouth brats who don't know how to keep their filthy sewers shut.

I understand where you getting at, don't get me wrong. I don't favour one game over the other. I like whatever catches my eye. But since I see that term a lot. I needed to know the difference between the both.

Don't concern yourself with it. It ain't in the dictionary so it makes no difference.

Fair point.

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

Not really, I'll use some examples;

I myself am a true Halo fan, I've played all the games since release, read all of the books and really enjoy everything about it. I know however that there are flaws, hundreds of them and I will accept that people criticise Halo on these flaws.

I myself am a true Halo fan, I've played all the games since release, read all of the books and really enjoy everything about it. I know that people try to make out Halo has flaws but they are wrong, Halo is the most perfect series ever, has the most fans and is generally loved more than everything else, anyone who disagrees is just jealous.

Example 2 is a classic fanboy, they both love the series but the fanboy has a blind hatred of anyone who disagrees with him and wont accept that other people have other tastes.

It should also be noted that these aren't the only two categories that exist, different people have different tastes and they can't all be labelled. Sometimes "fanboy" is used the other way around, you can be defending the game you enjoy for good reasons and be branded a fanboy because the other party blindly hate your game and refuse to see your point of view.

Your best bet is to play what you like and avoid arguements for or against because it makes no difference what everyone else is doing.
