I want to make a server but where it says T1/LAN I have 2Mbit connection but I get download speeds of about 250kb/s so does that mean im not fast enough to make a server? because I dont get 1mb/sec I only get 250kb/sec so should I only make a small server or is my speed fast enough to make 16 player?

there's no problem with your connection, 2Megabit = 250Kilobytes. You shouldn't try to run a server bigger than 4 or 5 players from a home connection though, you won't have the upload speed to handle it.

well on my broadband supplier it says it gives "up to 2mb download speed" and then after that it says "up to 256kb upload speed" so does that mean my upload speed is a lot less too? cuz my download speed isnt 2mb it downloads at like 250kb/sec

That is a fast enough connection for a 16 player server...

No it's not. You can only host about 5-6 players with a 256kps upload that is what most home connection average. To host 16 players games you need a full T1 connection which is doing 1.5Mps both up and down.

2megabits is around the same as 250kilobytes.

Personally i'd recommend at least 2mbit per player in both directions, with a bit spare incase someone with a stupidly fast connection comes in, so for 16 players you're probably looking at 40-50mbit. Of course 100mbit is preferable, but for that you're gonna need outside hosting from someone like Jolt.

wtf?! 2mb per person?! You are crazy. There isn't a public service that will give you 100mb/s.

Server hosting... duh... There's jolt, rackage and hundreds of others. Hosting servers on home connections on your pc while playing is so 1996...

But think about it, you all complain "But i've got broadband and it's still laggy!!" it's because the person hosting has >1mbit upload, so you're trying to download at 2mbit, but they only have a fraction of that available to them to transfer to you. IT's that or you go "Well i've got dial up and it's not laggy", it is, try playing on broadband then going back. Dial up is stone age in comparison to a 1mbit connection.

You don't need 2mb per person. If you have 756kB/s you can host a full 16 player game. Thats only 6mb. Acording you you, thats only enough for 3 people.

No, i was talking about your upload speed, as that's the key thing in server hosting, gameservers actually use very little download bandwidth unless they're hosting upwards of 200 players at once, and even then it won't go above 100mbit at the very most. They key to everything these days is upload speed; the more you have of it, the better. Think of it this way: Someone sets up a server on their home pc and plays on it. Already 3/4 of their PC's resources are gone in running a server and playing on it at the same time. Then a client joins with a 1mbit download speed; unless the server is able to match the client's 1mbit download speed, packets will be lost on the server to client route, resulting in lag. Then another client joins, with, say a 2mbit connection, because H1PC has a "select your download speed" facility, the client will try to use all the bandwidth available to it, which is probably somehwere in the region of 20 or 30 times the upload speed the server has available, so packets of data will be lost. We also now have doubled the amount of data the server has to send, so double the lag.

As i've said a hudred times before: Domestic connections don't cut it for hosting, you need a server provider like jolt or rackage to give you a proper server machine and a proper connection, and only then will you be able to play properly.

I was talking about upload. You did say 2mb per person. You do not need a server comapany to provide servers. I know a great many servers are run on home machines. One of my clan servers is run from a home connection. We have lots of people playing on it, and its no different than any other server.

The UK upload speeds are really slow Ive checked like every broadband supplier in the UK and the highest upload speed is 500kb and that was for 8mb broadband
so like any other thing that has less than 8mb will have about 250kb upload
omg does anyone know any provider that gives above like 1mb upload?

Elmlicker your wrong Im afraid.

If I remember correctly, our dedicated server was on 2MB (hosted, in both directions) and it was at least as good as the EU servers.

2 MB in both directions, as long as its uncontended, is fine.

Yeah, but you'll get piss-poor performance, especially if someone starts to download something from you (maps, plugins and the like), but because H1PC online's performance is that bad anyway, i doubt you'd see the difference :D.
