I have been thinking of reading the halo novels and wanted to do it in chronological order, i have found out that this order is what most people agree on:

Contact Harvest
The Cole Protocol
The Fall of Reach
The Flood / Halo Combat Evolved (game)
First Strike
Halo 2 (game)
Ghosts of Onyx
Halo 3 (game)

What i don't understand is every write up i read about First strike says:

"Halo: First Strike opens with the arrival of the Covenant armada at the human stronghold planet of Reach. The book follows both the unsuccessful attempt to defend Reach by the SPARTAN-II's who were on the planet's surface and the adventures of the rag-tag survivors of the battle at Alpha Halo."

Now i am probably wrong but i thought the book "The Fall of Reach" was where the planet Reach was destroyed and going by this order there is a whole other book ("The Flood"), and i am guessing a lot of time, between this event and the start of the book "First Strike". So i was wondering why all the write ups say First Strike tells the story of the end of Reach or am i missing something?

Any ideas?

Best. Ship. Ever!

You should also include Cryptum, which goes before everything.

Actually, OP if you're curious about the distant past of the Haloverse I urge you to read This opposed to Cryptum. At least read it first. That way, you can decide which you prefer as Canon. I prefer this.

First of you do not "prefer canon" canon is canon. You posted the terminals which cryptum enforces along with IRIS.

And cryptum is probably the best source of canon to date seeing how it flows with what was established aswell as bring a new wealth into the universe.

SO you're saying that Halo Reach, which is ridiculously uncanon should be taken seriously?
Cryptum was a fine read but it directly contradicts many important points outlined in the Terminals (which TEEHEE are from a game. Game Canon trumps book canon amirite?). the Terminals capture it's era a thousand times better than Cryptum did.

Give me 3 examples of cryptum not fitting

It doesn't technically deny anything stated in the terminals but -blam!- like the Forerunner Human War, The Prisoner, and Mendicant's apparent premature corruption and test firings on Charum Hakkor.

I find The terminals to be more streamlined and believable.

1. nothing was ever said about the human-forerunner war

2.I find that this adds up since the "proto graveminds" look or act nothing in comparasion to the gravemind. the prisoner gets infected and then turns into you know who- thus we have yet to see the "true" leader of the flood.

3.MBs corruption was actually stated to be 46-50 years in the book and again nothing was ever said about that.

you are just disappointed in how the book turned out in which you are not allowed to interpret it as "less canon".
