the halo waypoint says that the number of surviving humans after the covenant war was 200 million. I for one, find that number impossible. That's less than current population of America. And this is the entire species we're talking about.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

That is what we call being attacked by an advance alien race and having the planet sieged.

Anyways don't worry the number is around 1 billion, several colonies were bypassed to get to reach.

  • 06.29.2011 11:35 PM PDT

That's better I guess, but still a pretty low number. The covenant couldn't have killed that many people.

How could they not? They were far superior in every way, unless on the ground with SPARTANS, or outnumbered 4 to 1.

200 million is way too few. Earth has a several billion. Earth was not destroyed that that extensively.

They glassed Africa to stop the flood infection, and many humans were killed in the colonies and on the front lines.

Okay, but what about the billions in the Americas and Asia?

Not to mention the humans population on the colonies that were completely untouched.

  • 06.29.2011 11:49 PM PDT

You do realize there are several Colonies untouched right?

Forseti being one which has 500 million on it.

Chi Ro had "hundreds of millions"

Minster was another Inner Colony, most likely with over 100 million on it.

Lenapi also survived, although we have no clear population on it.

Cygnus was said to have survived after the war since there was UNSC activity after the war there.

Tribute was in the Reach system. Immediately one would say "It's definitely glassed" but for the fact that the woman mentioned in a First Strike adjunct was said to work at a University on Tribute after the war. So there has to be some civilian population there if it retains a functional university. Though we don't actually know how big it is.

Those are just some of the surviving Colonies, The Jovian Moons could still be alive, along with several other colonies.

I thank anton1792 for these figures.

Africa wasn't the only place that was attacked, we do know Cleveland was under attack which is in the Americas, we also know that Australia was completely whipped out. That being said, it's only natural to think that the Earth was under attack all over the Planet by Regret and Truth's Fleet of Furious Redemption.

Remember that this was 27 years of total war, with entire worlds being wiped clean of human life, colony after colony. It's never said for sure how many colonies were glassed, but probably something upwards of a few hundred.

And then Truth's fleet was parked over Earth, bombarding the whole planet, for about a week or so. It's entirely plausible that, if they targeted major population centers, Earth's population could be reduced to about 200 million.

3 to 1 in space, 2 to 1 at the end of the war. And UNSC didn't need spartans to win on the ground. As far as I know, UNSC won most of the ground battles.

They glassed small area around Voi. (Lord Hood tends to exaggerate things)

I'm pretty sure that number is not the total population of Humanity in the Halo Universe, if it is then that is pretty absurd. I mean I know the Covenant devastated dozens of colonies, but they also passed over dozens more all with incredibly high populations. And they barely even touched Earth, most of their forces were concentrated to Africa and the New Mombasa/Voi area with a few scattered engagements taking place in other regions of Earth.

Now 200 million being the current population of Earth, while still a bit of stretch and slightly unbelievable if you ask me, makes a lot more sense than 200 million being all that's left of Humanity.

That was just speculation on my part.

I assume Earth went through a mass exodus to one of the untouched colonies when the Covenant arrived.

I suppose the 200m is the amount of people still on Earth, not the entire count.

Most of these numbers are "guess-temets" but...

Human population before war: 24 billion
Human population after war: 1 billion

Human Population (Earth) before war: 20 billion
Human population (Earth) after war: 200 million
You do realize that the "guesstimates" state that Earth accounted for all but 4 billion people out of a total population of all people everwhere? There were many dozens, if not hundred of worlds in the Inner and Outer Colonies. No way those all added up to only 4 billion Humans.

We should know better, because we are better.

This is the total genocide of an entire species we are talking about. Covenant don't usually do things by halves. It is likely that the population of Humanity was only counting Earth as well.

As we all know, people tend to conglomerate in massive numbers, for example: about a quarter to a third of Earth's human population lives in India and China's coast. If the Covenant attacked today and targeted those two places as well as cities like London, New York etc. you will have wiped out a large chunk of our population.

200 million was when Earth was thought to be all that was left of Humanity.

Then the writers realised that that would result in Humanity going back to the stone ages thus making the entire story of Halo absolutely pointless, so now we have umpteen colonies still left after the war.

Finding doubtful that Earth have 200 million... it's practically impossible for UNSC to function with those only 200 million people! Once Earth had 20 billion people living there, it's likely that after war, Earth probably had about 1 to 2 billion left, at my estimate. Beastrium messed up lot content/data on Halo universe, so I'm not going to trust it unless they re-release new issue with tweaked/fixed for it.

I'm afraid, but answer is no.

There is about a dozen or less UNSC colonies remain untouched by Covenant.

For your record: If human population on Earth exceed 10 billions, planet will be overpopulated - 30% of humans could then die because of overpopulation. Even now, 6 billions is problematic number - many people is dying because they don't have fresh water, food or because of illness (bigger population - easier to get sick).

I also think that 200 millions would be postwar population of Earth. Covies attacked every city on Earth, even 2-3 months of that kind of attack would be destructive.
UNSC was able to win most on ground engagements, but not if Covies had support from air and space. Even if in some areas humans won, Covies for sure would glass that area.

BTW. Covies were at Earth from 20 October 2552 to 3 March 2553. It gives 5-6 months. How much time Covies would need to eradicate human population on planet? Well, whole H-C war lasted for 27 years to compare.

I think, that up to 60% of humans were eradicated during that war.

According to Cortana: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Human (see Population)
Before the war human population was at level of aprox.39 billions. During H-C war aprox.23 billions were killed. When you add birth rate to those calculations - after war remained aprox. 20 billions of humans. When Reach was recolonized human population was at level of aprox.24 billions.

KIWIZ RULE THE WORLD!

Its just that nobody knows it yet...

I agree the numbers to small. remember there where still planets beside earth that had not been completely destroyed or even touched by the covies

the covies mainly needed to get to africa and newmombasa not spend time killing of humans. they went to new mombasa activated the portal and ran into the ark. also many humans may have been evacuated in the first invasion where the covies lost remember that would be protocol understanding that earth had been found and the covies would attack here in full force. plus there are many planets that the inies may have populated and the unsc may not have talked about. remember the inies were hiding in huge numbers everywhere including asteroids. plus there was a huge fleet that helped cole and then escaped where did the people in those ship go. it shows that the inies were migrating away to a peacefull part of the galaxy away from the unsc and how many did they take with them and when did this start.
