I'm fine with it up until the moment they say it's for Apple development only.

Did people miss this line?
The studio's first mobile gaming title, "Crimson," is set to launch this summer on iOS and Android devices.

I was too lazy to read the article. Just read it, and I'm happy they're taking Android into consideration, it needs some good games coming its way.

Boring announcement. While I'm sure it's big for Bungie, I honestly don't see it being that big of a deal. Then again I'm not a mobile or social gamer so I'm outside of the niche. *glad I didn't buy an Aerospace shirt*

I have to admit, the first thing that came to mind when I figured out what it was was all the fans being pissed off that their shirts aren't about the next new Bungie title. Then I laughed.

So bungie's publishing these games then?

I wondered about this too. Though it was perhaps implied, I'm not actually convinced that is the idea. I really don't know that even a studio like Bungie has the resources to run the Aerospace platform/ aid the development of the games, publish the games and be fully focused on creating a (presumably) AAA standard game I.P all at once.

Wow,that's incredibly disappointing.

So i guess we know even less about their new game.

They already said it would have nothing to do with their new game...

I think it's very exciting, getting some cool Bungie-pushed mobile games.

Rovio keep angry birds going with a staff of 50, effectively knocking out a full new version of the game every 3 months. They could cut that staff back to nearly nothing if they were able to offload things like engine development, art production, legal and HR to a third party. Mobile development isn't nearly as manpower intensive as console development is, and the managed, abstracted nature of the platforms [of android, at least] make them ideal for outsourcing certain tasks.

Quite frankly, in my head, I see this as even bigger than a game announcement. Bungie is stepping into the iOS game development scene (and Android I guess) and adding some of its magic there as a pseudo-publisher. In a way, I can see this totally evolving and expanding the size of and scope of the iOS game development scene via Bungie backed titles.

This could be big, guys. This could totally change the handheld gaming market in a few years. I'm looking at the possibilities here. And besides, if anyone thought Bungie will name their next big universe with the name of their own company, you weren't thinking right from the beginning anyway.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us...

Fascinating!

This. I'm glad I have an iPhone, as that seems to be what Bungie likes developing mobile games/applications for.

Well duh, that's why blue flames came early for those who downloaded the app. Bungie was seeing how many people had an iDevice. Some cheap ass marketing.

My future is certain, I will one day fly away. All because I am saved from the penalty of sin. I know he lives.

I was hoping for something alittle more community involved, but I guess in the long run it will be.

That's actually kinda genius.

I think it's cool, but I wish the community could make games, but not get published. :(

DDOS'd Amazon's servers F5ing for Swag Bags...yeah I was there. :)

7-7-11 was another awesome Bungie Day! Thanks Bungie for making halo so amazing over the last 10 years. Can't wait to see what your Destiny will be next. ;)

I wonder if the development for the Marathon: iPad sparked Bungie's attention to get into the iOS/Android market to begin with?

History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.

Good for Bungie.. I guess. Can't say I'm at all interested in social gaming and it's disappointing that they hyped this up for so long for it to be something so mundane.

  • 06.30.2011 6:56 AM PDT

I'm glad they said their next mobile game will be on ANDROID too. Hopefully, we Android users will be able to download Bungie mobile shortly.

As an indie developer, this is really exciting!
However, I dont understand what Urk means by access to the Bungie, net platform.

My interpretation is that 'Crimson' will come with an SDK of some sort, sort of like the Steam developer community but for mobile devices?

I wonder what this means for the future of Aerospace. Will Aerospace evolve to support Indie Devs who make games on PS3,360 and PC and not just mobile platforms? I also wonder if Aerospace will it have it own SDK for indie devs as well.

Edit: I'm also guessing that we (the community) will get to Beta test some of these games perhaps?

As an amateur game dev this is great news. Bungie seem to have a great vision for the future of the industry.

I got to admit I am kinda dissapointed, but the more I read, the cooler I think it is. Plus it's quite and interesting idea and has loads of potential.

Kind of disappointed but oh well. I was waiting to hear of their new game. I guess that's what I'm doing now too. And Crimson was one of the copyrighted names that they had a while back right? I know another was like Something Revolution and The Seven Seraphs too.

creative freedom and the resources they need, like access to the Bungie.net platform and an audience with the incredible Bungie communityI'd very much like some clarification on what exactly this means for developers.

Yes. Maybe some sort of access to Bungie's servers for leaderboards, stats etc for the games?

I bet you came.

This isn't bad news, but I'm not excited.
This should excite you.

Imagine, for just a moment, if all those buggy, ugly and slow flash and mobile games that we have all wasted hundreds, if not thousands, of hours on, were made to the standard of a flagship console title, were launched with global stats and social networking packages, and coupled into these very forums.

If that doesn't excite you the simple fact is you don't like flash and mobile games.
FTFY.
