I am actually very disapointed in this announcement. While I understand that mobile gaming is a fast growing trend, I doubt it will ever reach the kind of depth and excitment of a console or PC game. I just really hope that this is not a future direction for Bungie. I personally have not bought into the iPhone/Android/uber-powerful smartphone hype yet, and don't plan to anytime soon, so this news is next to nothing to me. I like the idea of helping indie devs, but how about some love for the console and PC indie scene? There are a MULTITUDE of more promising projects and developers on the console and PC fronts than there is, or possibly ever will be, on the mobile market.
Casual gaming is not the place for deep gameplay, story-telling, or even pretty graphics. It's about catering to people who want to play a simple, interesting game while putting little-to-no time into it. I personally don't care for casual games, and as I said before, I hope this does not show the future direction of Bungie, as the casual market is NOT what made Bungie what it is today. Real games are what put them on the map, and I pray to God that is how it stays. Expansion is fine, but changing directions entirely is not.
This is of course, speculation, and are probably false fears. But, the intrusion of the casual gaming market into the hardcore (or mainstream, whichever) gaming market is becoming more and more apparent, with Microsoft going more casual with the Kinect and less recently, Avatars.
But, forgetting all of this, I am still quite excited for Bungie's next project. "...Wouldn't it be cool if there was a world that is always there for you..." is (bascially) how they put it, I believe...
