Regardless of whether or not it was their fault, what was Bungie's fault was their lack of communication. How is Bungie supposed to communicate to its fans that Amazon has made a mistake, when Amazon itself may not yet be aware of it?
There was a good 45mins between when the item first showed up, and when they were officially "sold out." If the community knew, they could have easily seen what was going on. The huge flare up of threads had to be some indication something was wrong. You assume they're sitting here monitoring the forums and Amazon as if they don't have other job duties than tending to a swag sale. I think that's a bit unrealistic.

Well obviously they saw that there was an issue so Halycon was sent in to tell everyone that it was legitimate. However, the failed to tweet it or send in someone that actually had the appearance of a Bungie employee. It was a single post in a nearly 2,000 post long thread. A single tweet would have alleviated many peoples' concerns.

How is Bungie supposed to communicate to its fans that Amazon has made a mistake, when Amazon itself may not yet be aware of it?What makes you think he was "sent in" and not just browsing on his own time? For all you know, he was the first Bungie person to notice, he did what he could immediately (post), and then notified the others.
Do you think every employee post in these forums is the result of some top-down official decision?
Lots of assumptions on your part, folks.
