Subject: Halo Cryptum, and it's author

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Stick with it just for the info it provides. I wouldn't say the stuff is groundbreaking or even worth the read, but if you want to keep up with the Halo canon then keep on truckin'.

We fight for that which is lost in the hope that what is lost can be found.

Read it twice over. Might read it again. 1st time I read it in three days (with school and everything) Great book. It was a little hard to follow at first but then it just blew my mind. Can't wait for the next book.

I've read it three times, first time I read it in a matter of hours. I think my eyes might have been red.

I had to sometimes take a break and [jump around] as I adjusted the things I thought, clarified, the things I knew, digested the things I learned.
In the end it took some time to digest it all but I did it and once I finished digesting it, I wanted to read it again.

I hear you BTW, Kat is the worst AI I have ever had in my turret. The Elite who hi-jacked her was better!

Stick with it. This book is outstanding, and he works so well telling a Forerunner story.

The thing I had to get past was the fact that Forerunners existed at the SAME time as humans. It confused the -blam!- out of me when he talked about humans having a steam powered boat. I was convinced that Forerunners stumbled upon humans when they were still cavemen. But after I figured out what was going on it went a little smoother. Then on top of that Bear makes up his own terminology for the book too. I think you can look up terminology on Halo Waypoint. I know they put it on the 360 Dashboard Waypoint app.

But I did just reread the book and I understood it much better.

only because you believe that the forerunners were godly and everything must be pertaining to master chief or action to be halo rated.

Greg already said the next book has action scenes, so lets see if you and the few other people that says this magically love the book after that.

I honestly don't get why so many people seem to hate Cryptum, it's one of the best Halo books yet.

Please don't compare Halo books to the original Star Wars trilogy. You can desecrate the prequels as much as you want, though.

I never did. That'd be stupid for one primary reason: we don't know how the next two will go down, so comparing something that is world renowned to be one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever (Episode V) to something that doesn't even exists is foolish.

You need to pay attention to what I wrote: I only was comparing the storytelling style to that of the original trilogy. The archetypal three act play.

1) Set it up

2) It all hits the fan

3) The solution. Unfortunately for the Forerunners, the solution also happens to be the problem. So in their case, more of it hits the fan even harder.

i've read the book, and i had to reread chapters to get into the story. I can't wait for the sequel. The only thing is i didn't get some of the words or terminology in the book but i figuered some of them out.

The humans were advance as the humans in 2552 but the forerunners bea them in a war and devovled them into sort of advance cavmen.

Yeah when I burned through it the first time I had to go lay down. Too much new info, had to sleep and let it compile.
I wonder how much more time after 2552 until the human race reaches its former glory, like befor the human-flood war.

Oh, I am still pretty much at the beginning. The main character in just entering some sort of (war?) tomb, following some pebbles.

It just seems very linear, but now that you guys mention it, maybe part of the issue is the combo of first person storytelling, and a bunch of Forerunner crap I really don't understand!

OK, I'll stick with it =)

For sure stay with it, your at the point where things get spicy and you'll get sucked in.

At that point its easier to read cause your interested and you'll pay attention to every word.

They were as advanced as the Forernners, maybe even more so.

I haven't seen that many people that hate Cryptum. Most of the well known posters here seem to think it is outstanding. I mostly see people saying they haven't read it, and when people who dislike it post they usually don't have anything more than the above poster who called it "Craptum."

That said, Cryptum is great. It stands with The Fall of Reach as my favorite Halo novel, and even though it takes a bit to get going, my mind was constantly blown throughout the book.

Why they didn't stick with Eric Nylund I'll never know.

As much as I like Nylund, judging by his Halo novels, Cryptum doesn't seem like the sort of novel he could write well. I could be wrong though. I've never read any of his other work.

Posted by: Raylette
The hardest part about the writing is that you can't truly visualize anything he talks about. Just about every setting, character, and object in the book is from a side of Halo Lore never shown.

I honestly had little trouble visualizing what I was reading about. Forerunner structures and technology are probably the easiest since we've become very familiar with the appearance of their architecture.

Honestly, I love how Bear kinda turned what we thought we knew about the time period on its head. Forerunners really aren't the perfect god-like entities they sound like in the rest of the lore. Humans were already an advanced spacefaring species. We beat the Flood first. Go humanity. Also, on a more minor note, the fact that the San 'Shyuum were once regarded as a fair species or warriors. What the hell happened?

  • 07.04.2011 1:59 AM PDT

Greg Bear is the perfect man for the job, some of his other works are inspired, Eon for example is one of the most interesting novels I have ever read. he seems to be almost a ninja at 'visualising' these insane worlds that others struggle with, Eon for example is about a giant asteroid with seven chambers inside it (with cities and stuff!) and the seventh chamber goes on and on and on, forever. give the series a chance, sure the next part will be much better, get the impression this was just a set-up novel for something much bigger!

DIE MORE LIVE LESS

I've had to read it over twice to fully understand the book, keep going, It weilds many secrets have fun

"What they don't knw Can't hurt Them

Yea definently stick with it, its worth it. However you might be slightly disappointed as Cryptum is simply a lead up to the second book, the climax is kinda lame as there kinda is no climax. Thats just my opinion, can't wait for the sequel though
