Please keep in mind that this is my personal opinion. I am not stating this as fact, nor am I thinking that I speak for everyone.
I remember how excited I was for Halo: Reach to be released. I remember how amazed I was after watching the Forge World ViDoc for the first time. I remember purchasing my copy of Halo: Reach, and eagerly feeding my disc to my Xbox 360.
Then, my frustrations began. I, among many others, became annoyed with the implementation of Armor Lock, bloom, etc. Now, I don't know why, but for some reason, I didn't mind Armor Lock in the beta. Maybe it was spammed less, or maybe I was just delusional, because at the time, Halo: Reach was claimed to be the "definitive" Halo.
I also realized that the maps were at the lowest standard they had ever been in the series. Sword Base is probably the worst map I have ever played in the entire series. Even though Forge World is still great, it has been a letdown for me because all of the maps feel the same to me (as in, they're all too grey).
I finally had had enough. I stopped playing Reach, and went back to Halo 3. After a while, I realized that I was having much more fun than I had in Reach. I don't know what it was, but my playing experience felt so much better. Reach was just...frustrating, with all of the gimmicky gameplay. However, that is nearly non-existent in Halo 3, and things just feel a lot smoother to me.
So, as time goes by, I stop playing Reach around Christmas. Eventually my Xbox Live subscription expires. This week, I finally renewed it.
I decide to pop in my Halo 3 disc, and it is the same as I remember it being (which is good). I then pop in my Halo: Reach disc, hoping that I will have a more enjoyable playing experience. Honestly, it is, more or less, the same as I remember when I left it. Don't get me wrong, the expansion of the playlists have been terrific, but the core playing experience still feels the same to me, which is the original reason why I stopped playing in the first place (the Armor Lock spammers, the campers, etc.).
I tried to adapt, honestly. But I failed. It's a shame that Bungie decided to change the core gameplay by releasing Reach. It's not necessarily a bad thing to try something new, but why fix something that's not broken?
I am not ready to give up on Reach yet, but I can hardly ever play this game for more than an hour at a time without becoming bored or frustrated.
TL;DR: Halo: Reach is incredibly frustrating, filled with gimmicks, and is far from the "definitive" Halo it is claimed to be. Halo 3, meanwhile, is more smooth, gimmick-free, and is an overall better playing experience.
As mentioned earlier, this is my personal opinion. I don't speak for everyone. If you disagree with me, please do so in a respectful manner.
