Subject: I think master chief isnt that good in close combat.

I'd have to check the extra legendary content. but fairly sure it mentions Mendez thought Kurt would become the leader.

Also, Mendez did not choose John to be the leader IIRC. He said "What should we do about him?" to Halsey, and she replied with "Make him squad leader." So he didn't go "We should make him leader Halsey, what do you think?"

Perhaps this is true. I believe that, although John was not like Kurt, he was also quite humane. He hated killing rebels and he saved Johnson when there was a chance that Johnson's DNA could save the galaxy from the flood.

Indeed. John's main issue was that he was antisocial. He hated socializing, in otherwords, he was shy. I wouldn't call him socially retarded, but because he had spent his days focused on finding a way to defeat the Covenant (and the Flood later on) he didn't have time to develop socially. The poor guy's a virgin for Christ's sake.

Also, I'm curious, where in Ghosts of Onyx does it say that Mendez thinks Kurt is a better leader than John? Page number would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dr Halseys personal journey.

Ah, well crap. I don't have that... thanks though.

Ah, you are correct. I forgot that that happened. Thanks for that. I'm beginning to think that John and Kurt were perhaps around the same skill in leadership. Perhaps Kurt was a better leader than John, but John will always be my favorite. Haha.

True. True. But, although John was anti-social, he knews how to do his duty, and if he had been chosen to, say teach the Spartan IIIs, i think he could have broken out of his shell and done his duty. And i hold firm to that belief.

Fight Finished 2007

That was in Zero G, besides there are things to calculate like the skill of the specific Elite opponents environment. In my opinion I feel Chief is still the best Spartan, he is pretty good at each category of skills needed for combat and has taken on much more difficult opponents then the others.

Agreed. There are people like OrderedComa and DecepticonCobra who believe he wouldn't change at all, in any dynamic way, shape, or form, personality wise, but I agree with you, I don't think he would stay in his shell forever after everything that has happened to him. (Who knows, maybe he'll start to go insane in Halo 4, like Isaac Clarke, Lol.)

Keep in mind OP that when that passage was written that was supposed to be the first time that the Elites were ever encountered and that was supposed to be Master Chief's first encounter with one with no sort of previous intel on them and their fighting styles or anything. Since it was meant to be his first time against an Elite it makes sense that he would be having a slight amount of difficulty with it.

However that whole situation has changed completely now due to Elites having been encountered far earlier on in the war. John has been encountering Elites all throughout the war and slaughtering countless numbers of them in hand-to-hand combat. He would be having little to no difficulty with that Minor. As others have pointed out, the only difficulty now to hsi fight would be due to the Zero G environment, something I don't believe any Spartan really excelled in except for the one mentioned in First Strike.
