Anyone else see those threads with really lengthy OPs, and then the first poster quotes the entirety of it? Is this really necessary?

What of OP's with a lot of links, or one that needs to be updated frequently? Not only does it look tacky to see the old version of the OP posted, but it also makes it difficult to keep up with updated information, especially if you jump into the thread late and read a quote of an older OP.

My solution is in the title. The OP of the thread shouldn't have a quote button. The only way you will be able to quote any part of it is to manually highlight it and then type out the formatting yourself.

...

Or there can be a second box prompting you to confirm whether you want to quote the OP in its entirety before submitting. That way people wont do it accidentally or out of reflex.

Please discuss and thank you.

All it took was a stew of whoopass.

And then the OP decides to change the entire topic after a couple of pages for the lulz.

I agree, people shouldn't quote the entirety of an OP.

Kidding aside, it's easier to hit quote then delete what you don't want than to highlight and paste since you have to add the "Posted By" and other formatting.

  • 07.03.2011 5:19 PM PDT

Well no, what we should do is have mods edit the posts of those really irritating posters who feel the need to quote the entirety of thousand word posts, regardless of them being the OP or not, especially when they only reply with a couple of sentences. They should also enforce a 'quote goes before your post' policy, but somehow I doubt that'll happen :(

I will selectively quote bits of an OP from time to time, and I know others like to break up the OP and respond to each bit.

This idea is absolutely ridiculous. So you're saying we should be able to quote the OP, and we need to copy/paste on our own? Why not just get rid of the whole quoting system instead? The OP is the most common to be quoted, and I see no advantage by this addition other than pissing tons of people off. If you're this bothered by it, then you should make smaller, more accurate threads that don't requir edits.

Does anyone even read these?

Doesn't really bother me. What I really hate or those users who quote it twice.

I have a good feeling OP just made this thread cause he was bored.

I've never had a problem with quoting OP's in my experience on the site.

I think a feature to have a scroll bar added to the quote system. This will make the wall of china posts be easier cause then they will only fit in a box that is about the size of this post between the lines.

This can also work for people who like to quote on quote on quote on quote and then reply cause i normally find that when 2 or more people post quoting each other you get a final post that has 8 quotes (max number) that extends farther then any news post urk has made in the history of his job.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The typical reply: This is just a reply if you take my idea as stated above being the size of that space i just posted in.

I doubt mods want to spend their time editing all the times somebody quotes a long OP. It is just one of those things you have to deal with on a message board.

As for the quote before your post, I think I've seen mods and employees doing putting the quote after their post. I don't know why they think it is easier to follow than doing it the way 95% of Internet message boards go, so I doubt you will have your wish granted on that one.

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

- Albert Einstein

The majority of the threads on Bnet don't contain lengthy OPs though.

It is hardly a time consuming thing. If you come across a post doing it: Edit, select text, delete, submit. Users would hopefully get the message fairly quickly and stop quoting thousand word OPs 3 replies in.

But what if the OP gets banned? I hate opening up a promising thread only to find the OP has been banned.

I assume it's mostly for being able to clearly see your recent posts. Having a quote as the first characters in your posting history won't give any hint to what you posted.

Here is the posting history where you can see what your posts say (and not what was quoted).

Here is an example of not being able to see what you posted

I should probably start doing that reply first system.
