Anyone else see those threads with really lengthy OPs, and then the first poster quotes the entirety of it? Is this really necessary? No, but not many threads have 10000 characters in their OP..it's all about how that person wants to respond and/or how he thinks he should respond. Usually quoting a post indicates that you are specifically talking about that post and you are replying to it.
What of OP's with a lot of links, or one that needs to be updated frequently? Not only does it look tacky to see the old version of the OP posted, but it also makes it difficult to keep up with updated information, especially if you jump into the thread late and read a quote of an older OP. I disagree. As you may know (or not), I've created many many threads with huge OPs filled with links and such. Having it quoted after you just shows what it used to be. Besides, people should be looking at the date as to when something was quoted anyways. Usually huge OPs are updated often, which shows up at the end of post with "Edited on -date-." At the top of the OP you could include "Last Updated on -date-" just so the confusion is minimal, if there is any.
My solution is in the title. The OP of the thread shouldn't have a quote button. The only way you will be able to quote any part of it is to manually highlight it and then type out the formatting yourself.
...Not very ideal...sure, it works for whatever problem you think this has, but to others, it's just weird and counter productive. Usually threads are created to discuss something (like this). How can someone discuss something in detail if they can't quote the OP? It just cuts off the discussion aspect.
Or there can be a second box prompting you to confirm whether you want to quote the OP in its entirety before submitting. That way people wont do it accidentally or out of reflex.
Please discuss and thank you. That is more ideal. I would hope that people would just cut out the OP, and just include little snippets of it.
