I mean should a forum that throughout it's existance has a long streak of attacks on other forums/websites with no indication of ceasing said activity really be a forum who's ends justify it's means?

Seriously, there's flood orchestrated Reach forum attacks going on right now.

The Flood is one of three places that still have civilized conversations and debates on this site (Granted its not always great but it is the off topic forum, give it some credit). Nuking it would just cause mass destruction.

While it is all too rare to see anything bearing any semblance to intelligent conversation in the flood, I agree that getting rid of it could cause problems, in that without an off-topic forum, numerous inappropriate topics will pop up in other forums. However, that is not to say I am against the removal of the Flood, I am just against any future lack of an off-topic forum.

The main problem we have right now is that the Flood forum has created its own separate identity from the rest of the site, and for some reason, those who frequent it have some sort of ill-founded pride. It is this "Pride" which drives most of the stupidity and ludicrous actions emanating from the forum. Many of them forget that these forums were built for fans of Bungie and their games, not for angsty teens who wish to impress strangers over the internet.

So yes, nuke the Flood. However, a new forum should be installed in its place, for two primary reasons:

a) With the loss of Halo related topics following Bungie's turning control over to 343, it wouldn't be surprising to see a form of migration from the now obsolete Reach forums to the Off-topic forum. The Flood has demonstrated time and time again its collective distaste for those who frequent the other Halo-related forums, and it would not be surprising if a dichotomy emerged between those migrating in, and those already established within the forum.

b) In the future, we can assume that with Bungie Aerospace, Bungie.net as a whole will become important to the financial success of those Indie developers making use of Aerospace, presumably through gaining feedback from the forums, as well as numerous other means. Now, if the Flood continues its current streak of spamming/attacking its co-existant forums, imagine what effect that would have on the entirety of Aerospace.

It would be much better if we were to start with a blank slate. Eliminate the "Flood" (Which also makes sense concerning the departure of Halo's influence), and replace it with a new Off-topic forum. Enforce stricter policies on any form of spamming or inter-forum attacks, as well as most topics (e.g. Politics) for the first few weeks in order to make sure that the remnants of the Flood's less-then-savory past tendencies wither away, and then ease up.

Alternatively, just split up the Flood in order to compensate for the now obsolete forums in the wake of Halo's departure. Have a "General Gaming" forum, which could contain discussion of Halo and other games, therefore containing the number of Halo threads which would still linger on, as well as pleasing those who still see Bungie.net for what it is: a video game site. Then just add another forum for everything else, but with a new name (i.e. Not "Flood").

I dunno, the flood attacks everything.

It attacked the Halo 2 forum, the Halo 3 forum, a website that treated gaming like being a alcoholic that was heavily christian, you know stuff like that.

Surely you jest, most of the time it's as bad as the Reach forum, worse when it actually starts attacking crap.

Not to mention most of the threads there are either "so there's this girl ..." or "god isn't real!" or random stupid crap like that that don't amount to anything, heck there are probably more posts saying "nuke from orbit" on there than there are ones containing civilised conversations/debates.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I'd rather keep them contained in The Flood. We don't want them 'flooding' into the other forums. Eh?!?

I dunno, I see it differently, I see these forums as bread.

Now, you know what the flood is?
It's oxygen and water content, it's what helps spread mold all over the place and helps bacteria multiply, the flood isn't containing it rather than it helping it to fester and multiply.

I didn't catch the last segment of your sentence, so they also attacked a website that treated gamers who were alcholic christains?

Its the off topic forum.... it is bound to have random crap, obviously you haven't been there for a while either because I never say anyone saying "nuke from orbit" and I have never been part of an "attack" or witnessed one in progress but I have heard of them. You make it seem like it happens daily.

Oh and one other thing, nothing, I repeat, nothing can ever be as bad as the Reach forum. You're crazy for comparing the two.

No it was a site run by Christians called "Online Gamers Anonymus".

I'm pretty sure you can get the content of the site just from that description.

It always happens some point after a new forum about a game is introduced, at some point or another the flood will attack it, most of the time I don't even see a reason.

And they're attacking other websites too. *Sigh*

Also the flood is far worse than the Reach forum, it's basically the Reach forum if it didn't have a spesific topic, you just don't see that and favour/accept it because certain topics you find interesting are discussed rather than just nothing but Reach threads.

And you're right I actually haven't been there that long, which just makes the amount of "Nuke from orbit" posts I've seen even more shocking.

Ohhh... From what I see is it a Christian meeting site for gamers or something? In addition, haven't they also prank called a girl and told her that she was the "chosen one."

That doesn't mean nothing is happening, just look, you'll see there is multiple threads that are entirely off-topic and are blatantly "Belong in the flood" threads posted by regular floodians.

And there's also retaliation, you noticed the new Reach threads in the flood forum?

Ah but thats not that bad, thats just a prank, but the spamming and possibly hate on the Christian site got so bad the admin actually made a pinned topic saying "People from Bungie.net are not welcome here".

That has nothing to do with misplaced threads or people who don't know where threads are supposed to go?

Shut the hell up, Halo is my world

No, I like the concept of an off topic forum.

Increased flood moderation would solve most of its problems.

  • 07.04.2011 5:08 PM PDT

I disagree with nuking the flood. They may be a nuisance sometimes, but other times they can have good conversations. And I looked through the Flood and didn't see any threads about attacking the Reach forum. I know they have their share of rebellious users, but that can be easily taken care of. If anything, the flood is just a safer, easier to manage version of /b/. They don't do anything too crazy and when they do, they're punished for it.

Bungie.net is a community and shutting down such a large portion of the community is a bad idea.

*Checks the Flood a 3rd time and sees no threads about attacking forums*

I am a Floodian

*sigh*

I was going to try and defend The Flood's actions, but this -blam!- has to stop. I believe it to be unique in it's community and identity, and that's something that should be protected, but seriously.

However, nuking isn't the answer because private groups do exist, so the attacks won't stop. Also, it's better to attack forums on this site than ones on others. Mess with your family, not with the neighbors.

Besides, can you honestly tell me that the Reach forum looks any different when it's being "attacked" that it does most of the time?

Are you really using "It's like /b/" in defense to the flood?

If anything that is a point against it.

Anyway the problem with the flood is that you can ban the users starting the rukus, but that doesn't stop the rukus, that just subdues it for a while, then the flood attacks something else.
