Subject: Do not Post False Information

The Forerunner, the Great Journey, and Heaven Theory

[Announcement Trailer] Halo: Forerunner

Posted by: Agustus
I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

Do not post false information or mislead other forum-goers. Yes, even if it is funny.I'm a little unclear as to what this rule actually entails. From how it's worded, it seems to be a rule that forbids trolling, but is there anything else that falls under its jurisdiction? I see threads in the Flood that show a woeful ignorance of both history and politics, there was a thread in the Community just the other day where a user falsely claimed Constitutional rights were entitled to him on this forum, the Universe forum is filled with people who know nothing about the story of the games spouting their opinions as fact and deceiving other forum goers...

I'm well aware that the Ninjas and the Bungie employees do not know every single fact in the world, nor can they (in a world where everything assumes a shade of grey) enforce this rule very strictly, but there are violations (or at least what I perceive as violations) occurring daily. So, again, what are the implications of this rule, and what would be examples of things that would violate it?

The beta is super awesome. RogueAssassin27 is now the person who got my Totodile's nickname. Hoo-hah! Relevant.inb4lock

Something like, "Chalupa is a terrible person", would give a perma-ban, from what I've heard.

Join ODST Expeditionary Force for a more mature, friendly community!

It mostly pertains to things like, "Bungie gave me an email asking if I wanted Recon"

which is a lie, since Bungie doesn't do that.

They did.

It should be a well known fact that you have no rights.

But more on topic. I think that rule is geared more towards slandering others.

I have seen it enforced at least once for posting information that was wrong, but as you say it isn't exactly something that can be really enforced.

My solution? Anyone who is unable to provide evidence deemed sufficient in defence of a stated position when demanded gets banned :D

I can agree completely with this. But actually holding people accountable for the things they say? Insanity!

Exactly (in probably more ways than one). What is the point of this rule if it can't be effectively enforced?

Because it can be. If someone is constantly replying false information to someone inquiring when the next halo game will be coming out, will bungie handle halo 4, is urk a woman, etc etc, the person can be banned.

I mean, that's just a professional way of saying 'If you troll, you will be banned [even if it's funny]'

HALO 2 FOREVER - M.I.A.

Yes i have a Twitter and yes i voice my opinion.

does anyone want to argue over the fact that you should just not lie about anything?

Thats the main base of that rule. Dont post something that is false. If its not true then your lying about it and that makes you look bad.

I won the Star. With this on Week 18.

Then where is the line? A user consistently posting false information may just be terribly misinformed. Should they be banned for it? (I think there should be and the rule should be more widely enforced, but in the same vein it's not like you can "cure" ignorance). I do see people consistently posting false information, but certainly not in a deliberately malicious way. Unfortunately various attempts at politely pointing people in the right direction don't always work so well (especially in the Universe forum) and that inevitably descends into flame wars depending on the stubbornness...

I'm rambling, but I guess I'd like to see the forum a little less peppered with ignorance in areas where it can be avoided.

The line stands in the ability to do research on a subject before someone jumps the gun and blurts out what ever they want before they get the facts straight. If they are misinformed then they dont have a need to be posting till they learn that they have to research their info first before saying anything.

There are 2 senerios here that can fit this issue.

Its like real life. You cannot go around saying that you have $1,000,000 when you dont even have a dime in your pocket. People will be asking if you can give them some proof and when you say you dont have any then they will never want to talk to you.

The other is that people can come up to you and hold you up not wanting to kill you but they would stick a gun to your head and say "Give me your money" and then they find out you dont have any you end up dead on some corner cause you said you did.

I rather think that the question behind the OP revolves around situations such as say, 'evolution is false'. It is entirely possible to to belive a position that is incorrect, and hence post something false without being lying.

And of course as noted the issue comes about in how strict should this be, and should we go and ban every user who posts views not in line with evolution. And then it gets even more complicated when you venture into that murky area of not quite politics but still very differing views, for example, economics, healthcare and so on.

Ideally, that's how conversations should go; don't go around stating things as fact when you aren't clearly informed about the issue. This is the internet though, it happens enough in real life and it will inevitably happen on an internet forum. I'm struggling, though, with whether or not it's right to ban someone because of this. Based simply on the wording of rules, yes, it seems like it is O.K. to ban them for it. But when you look deeper it seems to be a lot more of a flimsy rule; a rule that allows moderators to crack down on trolling without people complaining that "you never said I couldn't!".

None of the posts in this thread have really demonstrated a clear understanding of the rule - what it protects against and what it's limitations are. Do ninja's ban people for simply being stupid/misinformed? Should ninja's ban people for being stupid/misinformed?

That's a good point, and is why it's typically only applied to cases where users are posting information that could cause other users harm. eg. "delete system32". Besides, banning someone just for being misinformed is just... stupid.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.
-TGP-

I was warned for telling a user to post his Endure thread in the Classifieds, when they could be posted in the ODST forum as well. In the mods defense I was a terrible forum cop back then :P

I think it goes just towards telling the people something that isn't right, even if you think it's right and it's wrong. Such as someone posting a thread on the Community Forum about their cR ban, and you send them to the Flood, then that's misinformation and you made that user create two threads in the wrong place, even if you thought that was right.
