I'm having trouble getting Halo PC to launch on Vista 5308 with DirectX 10.

Is it possible for Halo PC to run in DX10?

you're probably better off asking someone on a vista support forum. None of us here will have experience with vista because i doubt any one of us will be on the microsoft beta program.

wait he asked if he can run it in DX10 lol, this is a duh answer no you cant seeing as no GPU's out at the moment support DX10.

And? you can run software DX in advance of your hardware DX, for example, on this machine i've got an x300se, which is a DX8 card, but my PC is running DX9.0c.

You can run non vista programs on vista. There would be no point in the beta if you couldnt. There are many programs that wont run however. It may be because of dx10, or it may not.

Heyyo,

Vista is still in beta stages... beta = unstable. I'm sure this can be rectified in the retail version once it comes out. You might wanna see if there's somekindof contact m$ so that it's not overlooked.

Btw, lots of games require a certain version of DirectX to run, now DX10 is rumored to be only on winV, and that's probably why Halo2PC might only be WinV. Now, all the previous versions of DirectX have all been backwards-compatible, so I'm sure it'll be the same deal with DX10. I'm sure it's just that the winV beta you're running hasn't been built yet to deal with games well.

...i've got an x300se, which is a DX8 card...
The X300 SE is a DirectX 9 card.

Radeon X300 Technology Specifications:
* Four extreme parallel 3D rendering pixel pipelines
* Two programmable vertex shader pipelines
* PCI Express x16 lane native support
* 64-bit or 128-bit memory interface supporting 64MB, 128MB, or 256MB DDR1 memory configurations
* Full DirectX® 9 support

I don't keep up with the Windows Vista stuff, but are you serious that it will only support DirectX 9 games and up? I have hundreds of dollars worth of games and Microsoft expects me to forget about them? That seems really shortsighted.

if this is the case im definitely dual-booting :S

i sure hope DX8 and DX7 games will work in Vista... i play a few of em and i dont want to see em go.

honestly though, ive seen some DX7 games that dont work in XP... so i dont think this is a new issue.

my guess is that the support for games before DX9 will be limited.

Well i'll be. I wish it ran shader model 3.0 aswell :). If it tries running anything, even 2x AA or bloom, it crashes straight away. It shall cease to be used for games when my 6800GS arrives for my new pc in 6 days.

Stupid parents let their stupid children play games that are rated M when they should be playing Big Birds Spelling Adventures

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

I'm also going to dual boot to play game and programs that won't work with Vista. Not to mention that I like my Media Center OS.

I haven't had AA or AF related crashes, but the card's too slow to be enabling those things anyway.

You're also forgetting that Halo PC doesn't natively support Anti-Aliasing or Anisotropic Filtering.

Im having the same trouble on my laptop with Vista 5308 installed :o(
Vista doesnt like my laptop apparently :o(
Plus I dont have a DX10 GPU which doesnt help.
I think some of the functions have been turned off cos 5308 is only the 32bit beta.
