Ok, When I got Halo for PC, I only had a Ge-Force 2. THe frames were smooth, but the graphics were very simple. I bought a Ge-Force FX 5200 PCI 128 DDR. The graphics are better, but now the frames dropped! The resolution I had it on was 1024-728. Is their any adjustments I can make with the card settings, and Halo's video settings that can make it smoother?

If anyone has the same card and has good performance please tell me how u did it.

You need a better graphics card than that if you want to play at that resolution. For starters, bring it down to 640x480 and see if that helps. Try turning off decals and other graphical stuff and make sure you have the latest drivers.

I have the same card and it's disappointing. I have to set it to 640x480 and run it in Pixel Shaders 1.1 mode. Then I get around 50fps. Otherwise it's 10fps during any sort of movement. I also only run full textures and particles. Everything else is off but it still looks extremely good regardless.

I have a GeForce FX 5200 Ultra. While I have the Ultra version of the card you have, it can't be that much different. I was running Halo on a 1.3ghz Athlon 2200 with 256 sd ram and getting decent FPS (30ish). I did have to run it at 640x480 with everything turned low if not off. Recently I upgraded my CPU/Mobo and Ram to a AMD 64bit 3200 with 1gb of sd ddr. That made all the difference. It now looks amazing on my comp since i can run it on highest everything. So the card isn't really that bad, athough there are much better. It's just a matter of if you rig can support the card and game cranked up like that.

I saw a review comparing the 5200 ultra to a radeon 9600 pro and it seems that the ultra and the 9600 pro is a lot better than the regular 5200. I've seen a lot of posts about the regular 5200 stinking. I think with more RAM it might help some I have 512 MB right now on a P4 2.8 I'd like to get a gig. But like I said with the 5200 regular if you run pixel shader 1.1 you can have full textures and particles and get average 50 or more fps and it still looks real good. i thought pixels shaders 1.1 would look lame but I barely see any difference from 2.0. I've been satisfied ever since I tried it.

It's no secret that the 5200 isn't the best choice for running Halo for PC. The card supports the DX9 graphic effects but it is an entry level card and severely underpowered for a game like Halo. To complicate matters, because the 5200 supports the DX9 effects, you can't disable the use of those effects. This is why older cards can run the game more efficiently despite the loss of the 2.0/1.4/1.1 pixel shaders. Try using a 5600 or higher for Nvidia based cards or 9600 or better for Radeon based cards. Good luck!

You can disable DX9 effects when you run in Pixel shaders (PS)1.4/1.1 as these are DX8. When I run the game regular which uses PS 2.0 I get about 10 fps when there's some good action going on. When I run it in PS 1.4 I get around 20-30 and in 1.1 I get an average of 50 fps even when there's action so forcing PS 1.1 definitely makes a huge difference. Also making sure that the video card properties are all set to performance, not quality, helps and turn off anisotropic filtering and antialiasing completely. the newest nvidia drivers for the 5200 just came out within the last 2 weeks and even has a Halo profile you can just select. Check out the halo pc tuning FAQ from Bungie right here that has some good info for getting it to run. http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/halopcperformancefaq.html But take my advice as I have the same card you do and went through a lot of stress getting it to run better, force pixel shaders 1.1 and you can have full texture quality and particles which is all you need. decals, and shadows are just minor extras for the utmost details. I can even run at 800x600 but it gets a little bit choppy in action. 640x480 is the way to go. There's no way around it, the only way to do any better than this is to get a different card. I'm saving up for the ati 9800 pro. It will run anything at full settings. I feel your pain...

Halo is one of the -blam!-iest ports ever (no offense i love it but u gotta admit guys...) but i cant see how you guys are having these problems heres my comps specs and its a frikin Futureshop special (built by senix)
PIV 2.5ghz overclocked to 2.62 (oh im so cool i can overclock my comp ;)
Radeon 9200se 128ddr (seriously guys your 5200 should blow the se away)
512mb pc3200 (shiat i added that extra 256 of kingston and it SLOWED my comp slowed down on 3dmark FRIKIN FIGURES)
im even runnin frikin integrated audio AC '97
The place to go to tweak your comp so you can rumble with the big boys is www.tweaktown.com check out thier windows XP guide and bios tuning. I swear with my soul that nothing will happen to your comp if you follow their words of wisdom step by step. I consider these peeps to be the secondary gods to Bungie. After all that, you should have a (mostly) lag free comp.

Well it lets me use Vertex Shaders but not the Pixel Shaders, I know my card can run them but I guess like you said it doesnt have 1.4 or 2.0 it has 1.1

I too share the same problem with my 5200. I can't describe the disappointment of buying halo for the pc and seeing the graphics and framerates suck a#%. Especially after playing many a happy time on the XBOX version. After many hours of tweaking and adjusting, I've finally just decided to upgrade. I went aheah and purchased an asylum 5900 and its currently on the way. I will let you guys know how it works. (in hopes that it should be flawless)

If I may ask, how much was the 5900? (no doubt it will be flawless) I did a search on the 5900 vs 9800 and they are both amazing cards. (is yours the ultra? or unleaded)

actually, i got it from someone off ebay. The card is supposedly in perfect working order, the seller had many positive comments from other buyers, and the asylum from bfg tech still came with the lifetime waranty. He sold it to me for $175, including everything (card, shipping, insurance) I guess its a pretty good deal. I've heard of many people finding the asylum 5900 for about 180-190 on the internet, however, i think that those promotions are over as i failed to find any. oh yeah, its the non-ultra version, but i'm not too worried about that

If you have good cooling in your PC, you can get the program "power strip", and overclocking will be easy. you can get the trial version online.

I used to have an FX5200 up untill a couple of months ago,and at best it was 'ok'.At the end of the day though,it was spoiling my enjoyment so I replaced it with an FX5900XT.Top card!I can now have everything running at max and there is no slowdown that I can see.Best bit though is that PC World screwed up on thier pricing and I got it for £80 instead of the £190 they usually go for...Moral of the story is if it's bogging you down, replace it!There's always a good deal out there if you look for one...
