9 years ago in 2002 I went to a friends house, I was in primary school, and I played Halo: Combat Evolved for the first time. It was amazing, it was like no shooter I'd ever played before it. One minute you would be fighting indoors in a vast network of tunnels and catacombs and then you would emerge to vehicular combat (Assault on the Control Room). My parents didn't want me to get the game as they believed it was too high a rating for me to play. I remember thinking all the time about ways to get them relent. Finally in 2005 I was able to purchase Halo 2, and in 2006 i purchase Halo Combat Evolved. I played through both these games thousands of times with friends.
In 2008 I finally managed to purchase an Xbox 360 after working (washing neighbours cars, weekly pocket money etc.) for six months. I bought it specifically for Halo 3. I loved the game, beat on Legendary, beat in on legendary with four friends, played infinite custom games, had all nighters where we would continually play infection for 10hrs straight not getting bored.
In 2008 i also saw some YouTube videos of Halo Custom Edition. If you have never played it or heard of it, go out and buy Halo CE for PC and download custom edition. My dream of finally flying the pelican was realised on the map Coldsnap. I will never forget the game where me and two friends drove a warthog to one of the pelicans, picked the warthog up with the pelican, i flew in to the canyon that contained the tunnel to the flag, dropped the warthog (with the Q button) and they both drove the warthog up to the flag, collected it, returned to where I was waiting and then we flew fast and low to get a well planned and well executed 1 point. Upon attempting it again a longsword shot us down.
In 09 i bought ODST and (Halo Wars but I won't go into the let down that to Halo that Ensemble delivered), it was fun for a while yet it did not have the replay value, me and four friends completed all Vidmaster challenges and unlocked recon, however, most of my friends list turned to another game in November that year. I did not relent and held faithful to Reach (and Battlefield Bad Company 2). In September last year I was pleased to get Reach, myself and the other Halo fans at my school where so amazed, look at the new forge and theatre mode, and firefight, but none of the other students where interested. Features like these are far too complex to the dumbed down and stoned brain that a CoD addiction brings about (its worse then hard drugs). I finished the game on legendary with 4 friends then legendary solo, had a crap load of fun on firefight and matchmaking, but then again in November most of my friends list once again turned to another game. I relented and bought simply to be able to play with more of my friends from school who thought Halo was a bad game. Unfortunately their minds have never had enough time to be enlightened and allow them to transcend into Halo fans.
After explaining to my other non Halo friends the awesomeness that is Bungie's games, I came to a realisation. As a wise man (or any other man for that matter) once said, "You must see it to believe it".
In the case of the saga that is Halo... this, is, true.
Never forget
