Subject: Some quick ideas for new methods of quoting

Three ideas in one thread, possibly a single idea.

1) Oftentimes there will be a post by someone who was quoted which you'll want to go back and look upon. What better way of solving this than simply having a postID attribute of the quote tag.

[quote id=27428424]The contents of the quote here[/quote]

Now you can have a link back to the post itself that was quoted. Simple.

2) Quoting entire posts takes up a lot of room in the textbox which could be better used for new content/formatting. Deriving from the first idea, instead of including the contents of a post within the quote tags, have the site do it automatically. For example, let's say I want to quote the OP (stosh) in this thread. I could type out something like this in a new post:

[quote id=18748346]

When someone views my post, stosh's post is automatically placed there within a quote box, the contents of which cannot be modified. I can see something like this being particularly useful for people who like to create compilations/guides, as you wouldn't need to worry about where a new post was made, you could simply quote it and have it displayed in the one post (eg. the OP).

3) Collapsible quotes. If the contents of a quote exceed a certain length (say, 1000 characters), have the quote box collapsed by default with an option to uncollapse it (like a reported/collapsed post), but alongside the button include a small piece of the text within the quote (a la, search results).

Magic is magical, so are shoes... Along with plastic.
Don't forget to flush the toilet, because -blam!- stinks.

So basically how some other internet forums set up their quote system, setup in these humble forums. This would be great for spoilers and large quote saving a lot of scrolling as you mentioned, I support this :).

This is a great idea. I quote a lot on various topics and I usually format them afterwards, especially if they're multiple quotes in one, so that they don't take up as much room in my textbox. I think the [quote id = xxxxxxxx] is a fantastic idea.

Ah, like a named hyperlink to a quote? You can kind of do that, but I see what you mean.

  • 07.09.2011 7:28 AM PDT

The quote id seems a bit redundant since posts have anchor links already. At least I still think they do.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

The only reason I don't like the first two ideas is posterity. Specifically with the second idea: If quotes display the original post directly, that means the if the OP updates, the quote updates. This could turn into a problem when you're talking about corrected posts, which could start making the people who pointed out the errors look like idiots. It would also cause possible problem on site updates, where quotes could be broken entirely if the code changes.

Actually, I do have another problem with it: Even thinking about your third idea, it's usually best to pare down a post you're quoting to just the essentials for readability. This would get rid of that ability.

I do like the third idea, though. Would be useful especially for people who don't seem to get quote etiquette.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I like having quotes that can't be edited.

Fantastic idea, this would help a lot, especially for people like me who frequently post on the bungie forums :)

Would love to see this. Multiquoting could use some love as well.

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of having a second tab open to copy in multiple quotes.

@trueunderdog

Chapter

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

I definitely like the last one (well, I like them all) because it's such a pain when someone quotes a megapost and replies with a really short reply.

Most girls I've been with were hesitant about taking it in the mouth. But once they did most would swallow. I got tons of compliments on the taste.

I think it's because of my diet. No fast food, no alcohol and lots of fruit.

Being that this is Bungie, nothing is likely to change. 3 sounds best though.

I do like the idea of using the quote ID system. But I would hate having to click on each and every quote ID to find out why they quoted the person. I find the system works well for small to medium sized posts and OP's. I mean you hardly see long posts. I think I like the 3rd idea the best.

What I thought the original idea was that you would reply to a post just like normal and click quote, but instead of actually putting all of the text in the quote, it would just put the post ID (like we can do for advanced linking to go to a specific post). Then when you actually view the post (or preview), the full text of the quoted post would be visible just as it normally is.

Basically all this would do is make it so that it takes up WAY less room in the textbox, and make the textbox for posting much more readable.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I definitely like the collapsible quotes.
