Subject: Some quick ideas for new methods of quoting

The quote id seems a bit redundant since posts have anchor links already. At least I still think they do.
They do, but what I'm suggesting is for the site to include a link back to the original post that was quoted when you quote it.

eg.

Something like that.

Posted by: akuWhat if the edit timestamps were included in the "auto-quoted" post? People could then see that it has been edited since the current post was made.

I agree with what you said about cutting down to the essential parts of a post though, which is why I still think it would be good to keep the regular "by hand" quote functionality (or at least until someone figures out a good alternative to it - #regions anyone?).

When I saw that I realised how useful a quote collapsing tool would be.

It's definitely a good idea - although it would certainly take some refinement, it's normally pretty hard to find the post ID for the majority of members, and there would probably need to be an easier way of gaining it for use in the quotes and surely having the quote in your post would be fine?

I'm one of those people who likes to deconstruct quotes alot for the sake of arguments - would this affect that in anyway, or would I just have to carry it out manually with liberal use of the C+P tool.

Three ideas in one thread, possibly a single idea.

1) Oftentimes there will be a post by someone who was quoted which you'll want to go back and look upon. What better way of solving this than simply having a postID attribute of the quote tag.

[quote id=27428424]The contents of the quote here[/quote]

Now you can have a link back to the post itself that was quoted. Simple.
I like the idea, but your fellow Ninjas don't.

I have a userscript that auto-inserts post links when quoting. Got a "spam" warning because the link was "distracting". (Words just cannot describe...)

[*Please note that anything in my posts is likely to be filled with sarcasm, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I tend to help people, usually*]

My issue with this is that I sometimes only want to quote small sections of a post, to highlight what has been said. I tend to do this in response to people, breaking down my replies into sections, per each paragraph.

With this, it would really only be a large [DERP] of a wall indicating that I responded to someone.

I like the idea behind it, but if I wasn't able to quote only certain parts of it, I wouldn't be interested.

Multi quote thanks. Opening multiple windows/tabs gets annoying.

Or the quote box could also be a link that takes you to the post that is quoted when clicked on.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

I particularly like number 3

Narwhallace Smithington: Gone, but not forgotten. Never approve of anything lil guy. <3
Furious George: The new -blam!-

I agree, but not everyone does it and we can't make people do it. It's an eyesore regardless what website it's on.

I'm all for having quotes work as anchors, that way you can direct attention to certain parts of FAQ's or guides.

  • 07.10.2011 10:00 PM PDT

I agree with that -blam!-.
