I just recently re-read Dr. Halsey's journal which came with my edition of Halo Reach in September, and I found something to be a bit curious.

Dr. Halsey only gave her Spartan IIs Mark V armor in late August when the Spartan IIs were going on a mission to the Covenant homeworld. However, Noble Team had this armor at minimum in July of 2552.

This raises a number of questions.

Was MJOLNIR Mk V ready for use, but Halsey hadn't issued it to her Spartans?

Did ONI steal Mark V suits to give them to Noble Team? Halsey didn't even know what Noble Team was until she met them.

What other explanation(s) could there be?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I know some spartan 3's were skilled were given modified Mark V armor so they wouldn't be cannon fodder like the other spartan 3's.

MJOLNIR Mark V armor was released in November (23-24 if I'm correct)of 2551, the field test with an AI was made in August however.

Besides, there's a lot of private manufacturers that could have made the armor for them.

By released, do you mean by Halsey? To my knowledge, she was the only person working on the armor, and outlined most of its new features such as energy shielding and AI integration. The armor was "complete" in late 2551?

That thread doesn't have this point (at least in the OP).

And secondly, many of the points in that thread aren't even inconsistencies (i.e. they've been explained).

Halsey was not the only person working on the armor...

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Perhaps NOBLE was among the first teams to fieldtest the new armor?

Released as in fielded to the Spartan II's and members of Noble Team, here's what Bungie stated in a weekly update about it.

The Mk. V armor was the first of the line to be equipped with energy shields (based, in part, on captured Covenant materiel). S-117 was not the first Spartan to receive the Mk. V armor, as he had been in the field when it entered service on 24 Nov 2551. The most obvious indication of this is how familiar the Marines on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn (C-709) were with the armor.

So, what was so special about 29 Aug 2552? This was the very first time a "smart" AI had "piggy-backed" in the Mjolnir Mk. V powered assault armor during "live-fire" simulated combat conditions.

And while it's true that the typical Spartan-III soldier was outfitted with the cheaper SPI armor, the members of Noble Team are anything but your typical Spartans.

By breaking canon, obviously.

It's not Hip-Hop, its Electro.... prick.

My guess is Noble team was using prototypes, while the Spartan IIs received the real thing later on.

  • 07.09.2011 12:48 PM PDT

she issued it to all the Spartans at once and so had to wait until there was no missions going and noble had no missions earlier that the whole of the spartan 2's, also noble could have been field testing the Armour

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

Jorge never received Mark V. He's just been using his original Mark IV suit (although some parts were added on, including shields.)

Noble Team wears a combination of Mark IV and Mark V. Also the Mark V they're wearing is most likely somewhat of a prototype. The S-IIs didn't receive theirs until nearly a year later. We see the Mark V in Reach is quite different than the Mark V in Halo: CE/Anniversary.

As to how they got the armor, the S-IIIs of Noble Team are the best of the S-IIIs. So they were deemed valuable. Though they were still sent on high-risk missions, they were given the armor so that they would survive it and go onto another.

In as simple of an explanation as possible, every piece of kit (whether it be a weapon, armor, or AI construct) needs to be field tested in a battlefield scenario if at all possible.

Before the first production model of the Mark VI was given to MCPO John-117, a good six other Spartans before him fielded the armor from the Republic of Korea to deep behind Covenant territory.

Bungie already said that the fielding of the Mark V was in November 2551, so Noble Team didn't get any prototypes, more likely they were Privately manufactured variants of it.

Furthermore to add onto that, Vociferous of 343i already remarked that the generational mark of MJOLNIR armor is defined by internal components, not the external appearance of the armor.

in the time between the world premiere trailer and the first few screenshots, Bungie stated that Noble Team was more of a Special ops kinda team (yeah right), and they got issued with modified versions of the mark V (mar V [B]) from some privatized company that's been making weapons and stuff.
