Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Because Microsoft owns the Halo IP now after the split.

When Bungie started independently, MS wanted in so they made a partnership. Now their contract is over, Bungie wanted more freedom (I think?) with their games, which Activision could offer. Since Halo is an Xbox exclusive, joining with Activision was a no-go, since they publish for both Xbox and PS3. (As well as other consoles). That and MS didn't want to let go of the franchise that made the Xbox.
Also, I think Bungie said somewhere that they wanted a break from Halo.

I like cheese more than you
Except Blue Stilton. That stuff is nasty. As is any cheese that contains stuff other than cheese

Bungie lost the rights in 2007, not too long before Halo 3 came out

Basically this.

Also, I think I remember hearing that Bungie wanted to start new games during the past years, however the contract made them unable to.

You know, I was instantly reminded of Spartain Ken 15 when I saw your username.

Bad alt?

Anyway. I'll answer your question, even though it's been answered. Basically, Bungie wanted to move on.

Because he's the blanket this bed deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our blanket. He's a silent quilt. A watchful comforter. A Dark Linen.

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

For one, they don't own the Halo IP anymore. Also, it's just time to move on. Bungie wants to create bigger and better things, so they're going to do it with a fresh start.

they separated from microsoft, but for that to be possible, microsoft has to obtain the rights of the halo ip. So they left, and that is what happened.
