Have Bungie or 343 ever really explained why the heirarchs wanted to activate the Halos? It's been a bit confusing ever since Contact Harvest revealed that they were well aware there was no Great Journey and that they were not the heirs of the Forerunners. In the games they still seem to believe these things fanatically. Did they manage to brainwash even themselves with their lies? I suppose at least Truth's sanity can also be called into question.

Head Down/ Chin Up!

This is definitely one possibility. They could have deluded themselves both through wanting to believe that it were true (Like any religious believer in doubt) and through trying to brainwash everyone else.

This too.

There is another I think. Given that the goal nearer to the end of the war was to find the Ark, a place beyond Halo's range of effect, and that Humanity was all over the place in terms of having lots of colonies and that the Sangheili had just turned against them, Truth may have seen an opportunity to wipe out all of his enemies easily in one go without killing himself in the process. Given that he killed the other 2 Heirarchs (Indirectly) that would leave him as the sole authority of the Covenant as well. (The survivors at the Ark at least) He would essentially be unchallenged in the galaxy. (Unsure if he knew about the Ark's ability to reseed life but it might not matter if he didn't, he would still have an empty galaxy to play in.)

All of this is speculation, of course.

I suppose that's a good explanation for his "I will become a god" line. He didn't really expect to transcend his physical form or any of that. It's that the Ark gives him the power to wipe out all life and reseed the galaxy.
