I have Contact Harvest, The Flood, and Reach. Have yet to really get into Contact Harvest. I think it's less exciting than the other two I have. I say start with Reach then go to The Flood. The Flood is basically Halo CE with some back story, but is nevertheless cool and entertaining.

You also learn what actually happened to Jenkins after the first Flood level in Halo CE...

But yeah, I would go in that order. Reach first. I thought it was great. If you have played the Halo Reach campaign, you will notice ALOT of changes from the original story. :(
Original Fall of Reach makes a little more sense than the game to me. I really suggest you read it first.

After reading Reach/Flood, go to First Strike. I don't have it yet, but I want it. Supposedly it takes place between Halo CE and Halo 2, and involves Chief going back to Reach with survivors from the Halo Ring in CE.

Have fun with whatever book you choose. :D

Fall of Reach, First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx in that order. THe flood isn't necessary but it has info on the marines on Halo 04.

It's best to start from the beginning, so I suggest Halo: The Fall of Reach. Also, it's a brilliant novel in itself, and definitely worth the read.

"On the seventh day, god did not rest, but rather he created 64 player multiplayer!"

Technically, the beginning would be Contact Harvest but, it's not the best book. It's good for learning little bits of info, (like how Brute Choppers came to be...and how humans were close to being allies with the Covenant, and how the war could been completely avoided if it weren't for a single idiot Grunt and a lying Prophet) but mostly it was hard to read.

Start with The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx.

Last is The Cole Protocol which, is just terrible...

I started with The Fall of Reach, then moved on to First Strike. I planned to read Ghosts of Onyx next, but I was too excited about Cryptum so I read that instead. I'll read GoO now I've finished that, though. From there I'll read Contact Harvest, then Cole Protocol.

I'll avoid The Flood as it's just a re-telling of the game...

As said above, Contact Harvest is the beginning, but I'd still start with The Fall of Reach.

You were totally and absolutely correct in every way, I don't know why we were arguing, you're so amazing I should never have doubted you.

Read them in order. Don't skip The Flood, it gives some decent insights on the events that happened on Installation 4.

Aye, it IS a re-telling of the game but you do get a lot more than just that. If you loved Halo CE then I don't see why you wouldn't also enjoy the book.

Fair enough, I'll pick The Flood up after I've read the other books.

  • 07.11.2011 12:09 PM PDT

read them in chronological order except for Contact Harvest and Cryptum

Expressing my strong liberal views without shame. Favorite quotes below:

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."
"One starts to live when he can live outside himself."

- Albert Einstein

Read them in the following order:

Fall of Reach (intro to Spartan program, very good writing)
The Flood (unnecessary, but if you want to see some side stories to Halo CE, go for it)
First Strike (fills gap between Halo CE and 2, more good writing)
Ghosts of Onyx (phenomenal writing, info on Spartan IIIs)
Contact Harvest (start of Human-Covenant war, I found it rather boring)
Cole Protocol (backstory to Jacob Keyes, plus follows Spartan II Gray Team. Currently reading it)
Halo Cryptum (lots of info about forerunners, currently reading)

Bungie.Match.com: Our Johnson knows what the ladies like.

The Fall of Reach, then the Flood, then First Strike, then Ghosts of Onyx, and you can read the others in any order.
