Subject: Group recruiting- Frowned upon?

Wake me, when you need me.

It seems when you try to recruit for your group, you get nothing but nasty messages in return.

Why is this? Is it so hard for people to say "Sorry, but no thank you" instead of saying something completely unnecessary?

Recently I thought I would give the whole group management idea a try. Made a nice group, but when I send recruitment messages, I swear people act like I slapped their mother.

You could just ignore it, the way I tend to ignore group invites...

Welcome to the internet. Sending copy-pasted recruitment messages to anyone and everyone isn't going to get you any fans.

What are we supposed to be discussing here?

"Nothing in the 'Verse can stop me."

It's the equivalent of a door to door salesman. No one wanted the product on their own accord and now someone is forcing it upon them. Some may be fine and actually want to buy the product but others will absolutely not want it under any circumstances.

By mass recruiting you're trying to convince people join something they had no intention of in the first place. Some people find it intrusive, annoying, and just genuinely spammy.

I figured that out the hard way.

Well then how the hell do groups on here grow to be so large if people get so annoyed by group invites?

They offer something unique that others would want. Word of mouth a general advertisement within the Classifieds. Let members come to you, don't try and force them on you.

If your group offers nothing special than any other group then it is usually bound to fail.

That's a mystery I'm still trying to solve.

But how would you find out what the group offers if you don't even bother to read the message?

This is how it's supposed to go:
1. Create group
2. Post group in the Classifieds
3. ???
4. Profit! -or- Failure!
Since there aren't really any rules with the PM system, you could keep doing that, but you're probably just going to get more ragemail.

Make a group, ask several friends to join, and ask them to ask their friends to join, and so on and so forth. It eventually grows to be pretty large.

Look at groups like Coup, BNet Achievements, or Community Carnage. All of those groups offer something that can be discussed in the mains, organized in the mains, and encourage community activity. All of them offer something good that a user would want.

Then look at groups that offer nothing but a clan. They can't talk about their group anywhere but the Classifieds or PMs. That is because they offer nothing that people want.

Plus, people are more likely to be nice to your PMs if you don't spam everyone the same copy and pasted blurb. Maybe act like you actually care if that specific member joins the group and you may do a bit better.

Edit: If "Empire" is the group in question then all it offers is polite off-topic discussion. Not really something that is hard to come by.

Well, Empire was just created a day ago, so it's a work in progress. I'm still thinking of innovative ideas.

It's hard to offer decent ploy's when many if not all ideas on this website are already taken.

I've considered introducing a monthly prize give away that can be one by competitions and what not. Like I said, it's all still a work in progress.

Also, one more thing about Empire. The whole goal of that group is to rise to the top of off-topic groups. Hence the name Empire; Total off-topic group domination.

People don't like spam, which is effectively what they are receiving when you send them a message asking them to join your group.

  • 07.12.2011 3:48 AM PDT

Eh, I get it all the time. You get used to it after a while.

That's the number of bans in this thread. Next time you want to derail something, go stand in front of a train.

I was hoping the message was a reply from urk about cancelling an order, ended up being a message from you about recruiting for the group.

Whilst I've just ignored it, I have been considering and left the group page open in a tab.

However, generally I just ignore them.

I run Skirmish!!!

do something else besides pm's, alot of people(like myself) get excited over a PM.. try figuring out your ideas for your group first, then lay it all out before creating it

Don't just throw a bunch out there and see what sticks. Figure out what you want your group to be about, then invite people who you think are a good match for that based on what and how they post on the forums.

If you're just duplicating another group's niche - which it seems like most groups do now - maybe you should just consider joining that group.

cant believe people actually reply when they don't want to join a group, that's pathetic. I wouldn't want people like that in a group anyway.

I personally never reply, I usually just delete message and occasionally block the person in question so I can receive no more messages from then.
However while I don't condone people replying in a "nasty way" as the OP describes I can understand it in a way. It's essentially spam or junk mail which gets some people rattled. Don't send spam out to people and you won't get an angry response.

@Geegs30

At first, I was that asshat that sent back nasty messages, but after being in a few groups and sending out invites myself, I can say that my outlook has changed.
